NCTA Allegheny National Forest Chapter

NCTA Allegheny National Forest Chapter The North Country Trail passes through approximately 95 miles of the Allegheny National Forest, from the NY border to Muzette Road north of Cook Forest. U. S.

The North Country Trail passes through approximately 97 miles of the Allegheny National Forest, from the NY border to Muzette Road north of Cook Forest. The North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) is a 4,850 mile hiking trail stretching from the the Appalachian Trail in Vermont through seven states, to its western terminus in North Dakota. It is the longest hiking trail in the United States! The

NCT passes through approximately 97 miles of the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) as it travels across the Allegheny Plateau. Its northern terminus is the PA/NY border and its southern terminus is the ANF border, 3 miles north of Rt 66. This section of trail has much to offer; scenic views of the Allegheny reservoir, beautiful hemlock valleys, rock cities, fascinating evidence of past and present logging and oil industries and many opportunities to view wildlife, including bear, deer, coyote, fishers, bobcats, songbirds, grouse and eagles. Varied habitats and terrain, along with frequent camping sites make the NCT through the ANF a great destination for a day hike or a week long backpack. There are many special places along the ANF section of the NCT. In Tracy Ridge, the trail runs on the eastern side of the Allegheny reservoir allowing for many scenic views and much solitude. The trail passes through the Tionesta Scenic Area where remnants can be found of an old growth forest that was mostly destroyed by a tornado in 1985. The trail now highlights the rebirth of this forest. Rock cities dot the terrain on many of the ridgelines. The most scenic of these are found in the popular Minister Creek valley. About the ANF Chapter of the NCTA
Throughout the year there are many opportunities to hike the NCT or get involved in activities with other ANF Chapter members. You can enjoy the trail with friends & family or join a guided hike. With almost 100 miles of the NCT in the ANF, there are always new places to explore. Each member can bring their own skills and interests in helping to maintain trail or promote trail events. Trail work days are held once or twice a month on the weekend. On those days members enjoy time together accomplishing bigger projects. Members can volunteer to maintain a section of trail or get involved with planning and promoting the trail and chapter events. The chapter sponsors the Allegheny-100 in June. This event challenges hikers to traverse 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles in 50 hours. Other chapter events include monthly hikes, the North Country National Scenic Trail Day celebration in September and a National Trails Day event in June. For those interested in geocaching, there are 107 caches placed along the NCT through the ANF, approximately 1 per mile. A pathtag is awarded for bagging 50 of the caches. Helpful Links

REPORT – MAY TRAILWORK DAY – SUGAR BAY

Fourteen volunteers did long-term improvements on the tread of the Trail from the Fishing Hole Campsite off of Rt 321 for about 1.2 miles heading south. The main project involved installing and repairing water bars and drainage on an uphill section of road grade. Water running down the Trail was causing erosion and places with very wet tread. The water bars and cleared drainage ditches should remove the water from the Trail, reducing the erosion. Volunteers then cleared out and fixed drainage on the next half mile heading south. Finally, two volunteers brush cut the last half mile of trail to remove encroaching saplings.
We welcomed one new volunteer to our work day, Tina G. A special thanks to her along with all the volunteers for their efforts! Hikers will enjoy drier feet because of you!!!
We hope you can join us and help make a positive impact on the Trail at some part or all of our trailwork weekend. We will be meeting on Saturday, May 30 at 10 am at the Sugar Bay Trailhead and on Sunday, May 31 at 10 am at the Chappel Bay TH. Mowing, brush cutting, clearing and some small projects will help prepare the trail for the A-100 in early June. Details can be found on our events page at https://www.facebook.com/ANFChapterNCT/events.

REPORT – THIRD APRIL TRAILWORK DAY – RED BRIDGE

Although the weather was not inviting, fourteen volunteers came out and completed two big projects. Both projects involved failed bridges that needed to be replaced.
One group worked on a bridge in the Chappel Run valley. They removed the old deck and completely replaced it – all in one day! All that’s left to do is remove the old deck lumber and mesh and raise the handrail.
The second group worked on an alternative to a failed bridge just north of the Tionesta Scenic Area & FR 133 E. Instead of repairing or replacing the bridge, it was removed. On Saturday, a rock crossing was built a short distance upstream and trail was rerouted there. The group also built a small box bridge to set over a wet area, using lumber salvaged from the bridge. Finally, the group removed all the treated lumber from the demolished bridge for disposal.
Thank you to all the volunteers, especially to Madison and Carter, two college students who helped with the second project. We couldn’t have finished the project without you!!!
We hope you can join us next weekend and help make a positive impact on the Trail. We will be meeting on Saturday, May 2 at 10 am at the Sugar Bay Trailhead. We will be repairing the drainage on a section of old road grade south of the “fishing hole”. If time permits, we’ll do more tread repair farther south. REPORT – SECOND APRIL TRAILWORK DAY – KELLETTVILLE

Sunday was another great day in the forest with exceptional volunteers! We truly appreciate the contributions of all our trail volunteers. We also thank the Forest Service for providing the lumber and hardware for this project.
Last weekend, they made a huge impact on the long term sustainability of the trail tread. One large group worked on placing rock crossings and bog bridges in a perennially wet area of a ridgetop south of Kellettville. Water collects there and has nowhere to drain. Volunteers strategically adjusted the location of the trail and placed the bridges and rocks to allow hikers to pass through and keep their feet dry.
The second group hiked south from FR 449 and accomplished several things. They replaced failed tread on the Spring Bridge. They painted a sign for a spring and reblazed the access trail to the Spring Campsite. The group also did several small drainage projects and finally built a 100 foot reroute moving the trail from a stream bed onto dry ground.
We hope you can join us next weekend and help make a positive impact on the Trail. We will be meeting on Saturday, April 25 at 10 am at the Red Bridge Trailhead. Two big projects are planned. One is the repair of a bridge in the Chappel Run valley and the second is a short reroute and stream crossing that will replace a failed bridge South of Rt 6. Details can be found on our events page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1135923801943170 .

The Forest Service has scheduled a prescribed burn in the Allegheny National Forest for Thursday, April 23rd. The final decision for the burn will be determined by ground moisture levels along with weather conditions.

The area involved includes the forest south of Johnnycake Run (41.92915, -78.92204) bounded by Sugar Bay and Rt 321. A map of the area affected can be found at https://bit.ly/4rV9ihr. This includes trails within the Tracy Ridge Trail System and a section of the North Country Scenic Trail.
The area will be closed during the burn and for several days after to allow the Forest Service time to ensure all fires are extinguished.

Kinzua Beach will also be closed begining today until the end of fire operations.

People are urged to use caution in the area of the prescibed burn as you may encounter smoke and flames, and may encounter fire personnel and equipment.

Further information may be found at:

Please, always check for trail alerts before heading out for a hike.

TRAIL REPORT - A-100 TRAINING HIKE

Two hikers enjoyed a beautiful spring day on the trail from Henry’s Mills to Hunter Station Shelter. One of them had come all the way from Florida and was thrilled to spend the day on the NCT. Spring wildflowers, a quiet bog pond and scattered historical remnants added interest along the route. They stopped at the shelter for lunch before heading back to Henry’s Mills, making for a great hike.

Our next guided hike will be a Night Hike on Saturday, May 9 at 6:30 pm. We will meet at the Sugar Bay Trailhead on Rt 321. More information can be found at May Night Hike . Hope to see you there!

REPORT – FIRST APRIL TRAILWORK DAY

Sixteen volunteers met on a chilly April morning to spend time together improving the Trail. As it turned into a beautiful spring day, the volunteers set out in five groups and accomplished a great deal of work. Two groups worked on improving drainage along different sections of the trail. Two other groups repaired two bridges by replacing treads and a broken handrail. The fifth group built ramps up onto and off a bridge to assist hikers, fishermen and mowers to get over the bridge. Along the way, groups cleared several miles of trail.

We appreciate all the volunteers that came out to help and give a special shout out to four volunteer UPitt Bradford students, Joeseph, Jason, Hayden and Kyle that attended for the first time.

Our next trailwork day is Sun, April 19 at 10 am. We’ll be meeting at the Kellettville Bridge parking lot located across from the Army Corp Kellettville Campground. Further details can be found at https://www.facebook.com/events/1900203314701365. Hope to see you there!
