Today is is National Women Veterans Recognition Day.

As explained by the VA, this is not a Veterans Day just for women, but a celebration of the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948, which was significant in that is allowed women the right to permanently and fully serve in the regular armed forces (and to be recognized as veterans after doing so).

Prior to the signing of this act, military women (save for nurses) were sent home after each conflict. Many were not treated as veterans who served their nation, but like civilians. They were often denied the rights and benefits afforded to men who'd served beside them, simply because of their gender. The act "deemed women essential to war efforts and allowed them to serve in the regular armed forces full time," (Missina Schallus, VA news).

Women have served in conflicts and wars throughout America's history, including the Civil War and the Revolutionary War, in positions as nurses and support staff (and even as spies!).

The VA notes, "Currently, Women Veterans Recognition Day is a state-recognized commemoration. This year, the states of Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah... and Wisconsin will recognize" it, as will the Virgin Islands.

With that in mind, today and every day we salute women veterans, regardless of when, where, how or how long they served, or whether they reside in a state that recognizes the holiday. Thank you all.

Today, members of the VFW Post 4449 Auxiliary spent the afternoon placing flags on the graves of our veterans at Forrest City Cemetery, Cedar Heights Cemetery, and Marianna Memorial Cemetery in honor of Memorial Day. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Each flag serves as a small reminder that their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. We are honored to continue this tradition of remembrance and gratitude.
Later today, we will join forces with the American Legion and other volunteers to finish placing flags, ensuring every veteran is recognized and remembered.

This Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to honor those who gave so much for our freedom. β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™

During Armed Forces Week, Marine Families proudly honors the brave men and women who serve our nation across all branches of the United States military.

While our roots are in the Marine Corps, our respect and gratitude extend to every service memberβ€”Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and Marinesβ€”who stand ready to defend our freedoms.

Different uniforms. Different missions.
One shared commitment to protect and serve.

To all who wear the uniformβ€”and to the families who stand behind themβ€”
we thank you for your sacrifice, your strength, and your unwavering dedication.

Together, we are stronger.
Together, we serve.

Happy Mother's Day!

Throughout the day today, we will be celebrating motherhood, from the VFW Auxiliary mothers we volunteer beside to the VFW mothers whose eligibility we joined under, and from the mothers we've met in the VFW and Auxiliary to the mothers of veterans who know how better than anyone it feels to be filled with pride and worry while their child is deployed. We also recognize and honor our Gold Star Mothers, our Blue Star Mothers, our currently deployed military mothers and the mothers of young children who bring them to VFW Auxiliary meetings and events. This celebration extends from biological mothers to stepmothers, foster mothers, adoptive mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers and other family members who've stepped into the shoes of mothers, godmothers and other mother figures in our lives.

Thank you to all who sent in submissions ahead of the deadline. (Unfortunately we will not be able to include any emails sent today, as National Headquarters is closed on Sundays.) But we welcome you to use the hashtag to share your stories and photos - we look forward to seeing them when we return to the office on Monday.

With the reopening of the canteen we are starting with a clean slate on everything. Below are a few things to note. Submitting information before opening day will help to make getting in the door run a little smoother.

1. In order to start a tab you will be required to put a card on file. To do so we will need the card information, name, phone number, zip code, and email address. By doing this you will be able to put your door entry on your tab along with anything you order through the night.

If you fail to close out your tab within 24 hours there will be a 20% gratuity added to your tab and your card will automatically be charged.

When you close out your tab at the end of the day you will have the option to pay cash if you so choose.

2. We will be implementing a points system for rewards. For every $5 spent you will earn 1 point. It must be $5 in 1 transaction. Transactions do not compound. When you accumulate 50 points you get 10% off entire sale (up to $10).
