Not one of the original twelve apostles, Barnabas earned the title through the accounts in the Acts of the Apostles, as did St. Paul.

Born Joseph, his fellow apostles called him Barnabas, meaning Son of Encouragement. He traveled with Paul during many of his journeys in the Greek-Christian lands. He is also considered by many to be the author of the Letter to the Hebrews and the founder of the church in Antioch.

Paul and Barnabas were very successful in their preaching to the Gentiles, as many wanted to offer sacrifices to them. However, when they were rebuked, they told the Gentiles to turn from their idols to the Living God.

Barnabas and Paul had some differences, especially with deciding who to take with them on a journey to Jerusalem, where they needed to clear up a recurring issue with circumcision. John Mark, the author of the Gospel, had deserted them once before, but Barnabas insisted he come along. Paul insisted that he was not fit to go, and their disagreement was so intense that they split for a while; however, all three eventually reconciled.

St. Barnabas, pray for us!

Did you know?

The ceiling painting in the Adoration Chapel depicts Mary, Help of Christians, the chapel's titular. The pope is Pope Pius V, who, through Mary's intercession, saved Europe from an invading army at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The knight is a nod to this battle. His flag is billowing back on itself, a reference to the change of wind direction that blew the Ottoman ships off course. The nun is Saint Theresa of Avila, a patron of the Sisters of the Precious Blood. This was painted by Father Paulinus Trost, C.PP.S., who created much of the art in the Cross-Tipped Churches.

Ugandan Martyrs

Charles Lwanga was born in Uganda in 1865. Growing up, he heard missionaries from the Society of Missionaries of Africa preach, and he accepted the truth of the Gospel and became a catechumen. The missionaries were eventually kicked out of Uganda, but Charles continued to live the Gospel.

King Mwanga ruled Uganda with violence and often abused the young boys and men in his court, pages, and servants.

Charles helped protect the young boys from the king, who abused them. Once the king realized what Charles was doing, he ordered all the Christians in his court to declare whether they pray or don’t pray. Those who declared that they prayed were condemned to death. The young men and boys were forced to walk a 37-mile trek to ex*****on.

One of the boys, 13-year-old Kizito, was remembered laughing and chattering, due to the courage and joy he felt, knowing he was dying for his Savior.

Andrew Kagwa and Matthias Murumba were also among the condemned. Andrew was beheaded, and his right arm was cut off his body. The others were rolled in reed mats and burned on a pyre, calling out on the name of Jesus, “You can burn our bodies, but you cannot harm our souls!”

There are twenty-two Catholic martyrs of Uganda. The Shrine houses two of those brave souls, St. Charles Lwanga and St. Mathias Marumba. Relic number 219 can be found in the Sacred Heart Altar. Their feast day is celebrated on June 3rd.

St. Charles Lwanga is the patron of youth and Catholic Action in most of Africa

St. Matthias Murumba is the patron of chiefs and families

Ugandan Martyrs, pray for us!

Have you visited the Heritage Museum at the Maria Stein Shrine? There are six galleries designed to interpret the early settlement of southern Auglaize and Mercer counties in Ohio. Settlers to this area were largely of German descent and of the Roman Catholic faith. The displays in the museum reflect their way of life in the mid to late nineteenth century. Special attention has been devoted to the history of the Sisters of the Precious Blood and their contribution to the cultural development of these early pioneers.
