This one is special.

Tim Bernardes played in LA last week, NYC this Thursday with a stopover in Marfa en route home to South America end of September.

One of the shining hearts of São Paulo, Tim Bernardes, performs songs of love, sofrência, and change.

Tim performs mostly from his enveloping and expansive album, 𝙈𝙞𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙨 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙨í𝙫𝙚𝙞𝙨 (https://ffm.to/timbernardes), which was included in Best of 2022 roundups from The New Yorker, Uncut, Aquarium Drunkard and more. These songs connect the cosmic dots from Tropicalia and samba to contemporary indie and folk while meditating on metaphysical transformation in the face of grave uncertainty.

A Latin Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, musician, composer, and producer, Bernardes has collaborated with Fleet Foxes, Tom Zé, David Byrne, Gal Costa, Devendra Banhart, Shintaro Sakamoto, and more.

Bernardes has emerged as one of Brazil’s most profound musical talents of his generation, a contemporary artist with deep roots in Brazil’s verdant musical heritage.

GARDEN DRAWING NIGHT WITH ESTER PARTEGÀS

Please join Ballroom Marfa for a special drawing workshop with Ester Partegàs on Thursday, August 22nd at 7:30pm at The Capri, Marfa.

Ester Partegàs (Barcelona, 1972) is an artist who creates conditions of possibility for building forms of relation against the backdrop of global flows of capital and their attendant power structures. She dismembers, recombines, and reuses low-cost materials in her hand-built sculptures that focus attention on the systems of value with which we live. Partegàs also draws closely on her personal history addressing experiences, and effects, of disjunction and dislocation.

Ballroom Marfa is honored to announce that Jaime Herrell will join the team as our new Associate Curator. Currently residing in Santa Fe, NM, Herrell is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation with European heritage, when she sets out for West Texas, her voice and vision are coming with her!

Jaime Herrell’s career and education span over a decade within roles in historic museums and nationally renowned institutions, as well as direct work with distinguished Native and non-Native artists. Herrell has immersed herself in significant cultural centers and spaces, providing her with a broad spectrum of experiences.

Herrell is deeply committed to creating and fostering dynamic spaces that prioritize artists and community, and aim for a long-term unique impact. Interim Director, Holly Harrison says, “Jaime is an advocate for inclusive curatorial practices, and the specific individualities of each artist and their practice. She truly cares about how institutions can engage with a broad audience and her love of artists and the work that they do make her a uniquely perfect fit for Ballroom Marfa.”

We are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Julie Speed: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙗𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙀𝙙𝙚𝙣 opening Friday, September 20, 2024 from 5pm–8pm.

The exhibition brings together paintings, collages, and gouaches from Julie Speed created over multiple decades. Speed, whose work is often compared to that of the Surrealists, Dada, and Renaissance painters, has an artistic style that struggles to fit neatly into any art historical period. The work is both outside of reality and tied to it. An astute draftsperson, Speed depicts strong, often non-gendered figures inhabiting dream-like spaces, offering comfort in the shared nature of our inner thoughts. Speed wants us to be aware of our time on this planet, understand our relationship to it and to each other, and know that the universe is watching.

Shimmering against the Marfa skies, Ballroom Marfa presents Apaxoro by María de los Angeles Rodríguez Jiménez in UnFlagging: Futures.

With tenderness and care, Apaxoro speaks to the artist’s memories of her Cuban home. Her flag evokes a spirit of hopefulness that is mirrored in the vastness of the West Texas landscape.

The flag evades simple categorization in its integration of spirituality and presence, reminding the audience to be here now. The soft fabric moves with the wind, it glistens in the light, and playfully beckons for our attention. The flag performs for its viewer, activated by unseen forces reminding us that home exists as both a mental and physical place.

New music release ⭐️💫⭐️
We are excited to announce the release of 𝙐𝙥 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝, 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙨, new music from artist, composer, and percussionist Jamire Williams. Commissioned by Ballroom Marfa, this new mixtape is now available in a limited edition of 100. Listeners will hear Jamire’s uniquely impressionistic drumming style collage with electronics and field recordings, creating an exquisite mixtape of found and treasured tones.

The project features sounds pulled from Williams’s extensive collection of original material and field recordings gathered during his residency with Ballroom Marfa. Listening closely you’ll hear his recordings from many places in Marfa, including the Arena at Chinati Foundation.

𝙐𝙥 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝, 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙨 is now available in a limited pressing of 100 cassettes, exclusively on Ballroom’s website.
