Exciting news! Marfa Live Arts will host David Romo to be the resident playwright to teach the high school students in the 17th annual Playwriting Program. We can’t wait to see the work it generates!

David Dorado Romo is a historian, musician, writer, and translator from the El Paso/Juárez border. His work focuses on reimagining the rich and complicated history of this border by telling its neglected and forgotten histories. He is the author of two acclaimed books that center these critical histories: Ringside Seat to a Revolution: An Underground Cultural History of El Paso and Juarez, 1893-1923 (2005) and Borderlands and the Mexican American Story (2024). Through his interdisciplinary approach, David allows the creative spirit to guide him by leveraging stories, language, and creativity to navigate the diverse and critical community spaces where he does most of his work.

IN 2021 Marfa Live Arts debuted DOBLE NACIONALIDAD a music video featuring Ramón Vega Navarro of Ojinaga, Mexico. His song was chosen by the jury of playwrights as the 2nd place winner of the Marfa Live Arts Short Playwriting Contest and is dedicated to the workers at Village Farms who live in Ojinaga and travel to Marfa every day for work.

🎶🎶 Ramón recently wrote a song “A Marfa Voy” about his experience coming to Marfa and we ❤️ it! Thank you! Ramon Vega Navarro

Since 2020, the Crown Scholarship has been awarded to graduating students who have excelled in both academic and artistic endeavors.The 2026 Marfa Live Arts Crown Scholarship was awarded to Christopher Huerta today at the Marfa High School assembly.

It’s that time of ther year when Monologues by Marfa Junior High students will come to life by local actors! 🎭

Congratulations to all the winning young playwrights whose monologues will hit the stage Tuesday! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

7th Grade 🏆:

8th Grade 🏆:
Itzayanna Duran, Olivia Esparza, Raivon Hamilton, Juliet Hinojos, Fabian Marquez and Logan Pippen

The Spring Showcase at Planet Marfa, is a great chance to support the students! 👆🏻7th grader Liam Lopez about his winning monologue and his vision for the performance.

“Even if you don’t know a student or a teacher, please attend. Come show a student that you want to hear what they think and that you value their voice in this community. We’ve also lined up some really great actors to participate. I love the opportunity to connect a student with an adult who maybe wouldn’t have gotten the chance to know them otherwise. It’s a reciprocal benefit. We feed one another with support and ideas which will then go directly into the fabric of our shared community. If we want to sustain true local ideas and values into this place, this symbiotic relationship is necessary,” says lead instructor Rachel Tate.

A closer look on the Marfa Live Arts One Act Play Program …

For the past fifteen years this workshop has been taught annually at Marfa High School. And with each year, students’ writing voices have matured and developed. It’s a big accomplishment for anyone to write a play, and these kids feel great about having done it.

The Playwriting Workshop and presentation of the Marfa High School One-Act Plays supports the Marfa Live Arts’ mission of bringing the performing arts to West Texas, educating the area’s youth, and bringing the community together.

Marfa Live Arts presents the 15th Annual Marfa High School One-Act Plays 🎭 showcasing four award-winning student plays brought to life by our local star ✨ actors!
