It’s that time of ther year when Monologues by Marfa Junior High students will come to life by local actors! 🎭

Congratulations to all the winning young playwrights whose monologues will hit the stage Tuesday! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

7th Grade 🏆:
Azul Alvidrez, Ranger Dugan, Fatima Floresvillar, Liam Lopez and Lyla Luppino.

8th Grade 🏆:
Itzayanna Duran, Olivia Esparza, Raivon Hamilton, Juliet Hinojos, Fabian Marquez and Logan Pippen

The Spring Showcase at Planet Marfa, is a great chance to support the students! 👆🏻7th grader Liam Lopez about his winning monologue and his vision for the performance.

“Even if you don’t know a student or a teacher, please attend. Come show a student that you want to hear what they think and that you value their voice in this community. We’ve also lined up some really great actors to participate. I love the opportunity to connect a student with an adult who maybe wouldn’t have gotten the chance to know them otherwise. It’s a reciprocal benefit. We feed one another with support and ideas which will then go directly into the fabric of our shared community. If we want to sustain true local ideas and values into this place, this symbiotic relationship is necessary,” says lead instructor Rachel Tate.

COME ALL to Marfa Lives Arts’ SPRING SHOWCASE THEATER with local actors at Planet Marfa on Tuesday, April 7, at 5pm

A closer look on the Marfa Live Arts One Act Play Program …

For the past fifteen years this workshop has been taught annually at Marfa High School. And with each year, students’ writing voices have matured and developed. It’s a big accomplishment for anyone to write a play, and these kids feel great about having done it.

The Playwriting Workshop and presentation of the Marfa High School One-Act Plays supports the Marfa Live Arts’ mission of bringing the performing arts to West Texas, educating the area’s youth, and bringing the community together.

These programs have become the cornerstone of Marfa Live Arts’ education program. To get involved or for more info: marfalivearts.org

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Our very own Marfa Live Arts Director Jennie Lyn Hamilton will present Por La Ventana at the Teatro Santa Ana in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico tomorrow February 12, 2026!

Por La Ventana is a multi-media piece exploring ancestral connections through the lens of the Mexican Revolution set against the visual backdrop of a black-and-white film which runs the show’s length. The film is composed of public domain footage from Mexico during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, creating a moving historical canvas for the story.

At its heart, Por La Ventana is an exploration of connection – an intimate search for meaning, purpose and family ties that stretches from the present day back to the era of the Mexican Revolution. The narrative weaves together Francisco Madero’s fascination with Spiritism – his belief in communing with spirits for guidance as he stepped into his role leading Mexico into the 1910 Revolution – with Hamilton’s own family history in San Luis Potosí. It also explores the role the United States played in the Revolution recounting the Tampico Incident which led to the US invasion of Veracruz in 1914 under President Woodrow Wilson.

Por La Ventana will be presented in Marfa later this year!

Last week we hosted our two big workshops at the schools!

Marfa Live Arts is back in Marfa ISD Junior High for the 10th Annual Marfa Live Arts Playwriting Preparatory workshop led by Rachel Tate.

“I love the opportunity to hear how their minds work as they grow in such an odd and wonderful
place in their lives: middle school. I think we all can recall back at least a little to the big feelings in their lives,” Tate explained. “So much is happening in their bodies and in their dynamics, it’s prime content for writing. The monologue is the perfect format to try out their thoughts and see what their voices are really wanting to say. The monologue is one person, one voice.”

Marfa Live Arts, Tate added, is open to hearing from community members of all walks of
life to engage and join in on the fun. “If you would to be considered to perform at the Winter Showcase in March (date to be determined) please reach out to us. We would love to have some new collaborators!” ❤️

Lets give a round of 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 as we welcome Marfa Live Arts’ playwright in residence and Cal Poly professor of Theater Ramón Esquivel who has been guiding the Marfa High students through the playwriting process this week 🤗.
______________

“I’m looking forward to helping them believe in their own voices and their own vision to write a play that is meaningful to them as individuals,” Ramón said. “I think that’s actually how we end up writing an interesting play: we write something that we want to see as individual people, and it ends up having a more universal appeal if it’s very specific.”

______________

In its 15th year, this annual weeklong playwriting program challenges the students to unearth their creative sides ✍️ in order to create a play that may be produced on stage for the forthcoming annual One Acts Play on March 4th. 🎭 So exited to see what the students come up with this year….. thank you once again Ramón Esquival 🤩 we are thrilled to have you this year!
