Yesterday, the Friends of the Ruidosa Church joined a lawsuit as a co-plaintiff alongside the Texas Civil Rights Project and the Center for Biological Diversity against the Department of Homeland Security.

This action is not one we take lightly. It reflects both the urgency of the threat before us and our responsibility to protect a historic and cultural site that has already endured decades of environmental hardship and community effort to preserve it.

The proposed border wall would have a direct and irreversible impact on the Ruidosa Church and its surrounding landscape, an area deeply rooted in the history, identity, and heritage of this region. Beyond the structure itself, this place represents generations of stories, traditions, and connection to the land.

Our mission has always been to preserve and protect this site with care, respect, and integrity. Joining this legal effort is a continuation of that commitment.

We believe that preservation and progress are not mutually exclusive and that solutions should not come at the expense of irreplaceable cultural and historical resources.

We are grateful to stand alongside partners and community members who share in this responsibility, and we remain committed to advocating for the protection of this place for future generations.

We will continue to share updates as this process unfolds. Thank you for your continued support.

The proposed border wall in the Big Bend region is moving forward, and it risks far more than damage to the land. It threatens the cultural heritage of our shared border region, including the community of Ruidosa.

For generations, families, traditions, and communities have lived and moved across this landscape. A wall along the Rio Grande would divide ecosystems, disrupt wildlife corridors, and sever the cultural ties that have defined this area for centuries.

The Friends of the Ruidosa Church strongly opposes the construction of a border wall here. It directly threatens the historic landscape we are working to preserve and conflicts with our mission to protect the cultural history of this beloved place.

This moment requires our community to speak up!

Can’t make it to Ruidosa this weekend?

Following Community Day 2025 and the unveiling of his site-specific installation at the historic Ruidosa Church, Romain Froquet returns with a special presentation and gathering hosted by the Friends of the Ruidosa Church.

- Wednesday, November 5
- 5:00–8:00 PM
- Do Right Hall, 110 W. Dallas St., Marfa
- Food and refreshments will be provided

This event marks the next chapter in Froquet’s West Texas project. His installation, originally created within the Ruidosa Church, will be carefully deconstructed and reimagined for display and sale — with proceeds benefiting the ongoing restoration of the church.
