We are aware of a video posted today in a community group showing our Helping Hand truck and our volunteers in action. The video was shared from an alias account, by an individual who we know whom it is, and has repeatedly posted misleading and negative statements about our organization and (at times) about our volunteers personally.
We want to clearly state that the claims being implied do not reflect the truth of our work, our mission, or the integrity of the people who serve this community.
There has been particular attention placed on how our donated truck is being used. We want to reassure our supporters that the truck is being used exactly as intended and in alignment with what was understood by its donors. Since receiving the truck, we have not changed our longstanding practices regarding vehicle usage. For years prior to the donation, volunteers used their own vehicles and trailers, borrowed equipment, or rented trucks to meet the needs of our organization. Having a designated truck simply allows us to carry out the same work more efficiently without having to secure an outside vehicle or rack up miles on anothers vehicle.
Regarding the specific video: the volunteers and truck usage shown were fully authorized. At the time, volunteers were preparing for our annual benefit sale, which we begin organizing around February each year. We had received a large clothing donation that required washing before sorting and storage.
These volunteers shown generously gave several hours of their personal time to receive, wash, dry, and transport these items. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication. Without the commitment of volunteers like these, our summer benefit sale would not be possible. And therefore we wouldn't have a food pantry in Marcola.
In the coming months, the truck may be seen more frequently as we prepare for the benefit sale, transport food, or carry out other activities directly related to serving our community. That is precisely the purpose for which it was donated.
We will not engage in online conflict. However, we will continue to address misinformation when necessary. Anyone with genuine questions or concerns is encouraged to contact us directly through Facebook Messenger, email, or by speaking with our manager or assistant manager.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission and the volunteers who make this work possible.
