Robert Goodwin and Julie Kiernan, founders of Stone & Compass, visited Bulgaria for the first time in 2011 and came up with a new business idea that would incorporate their love of nature, education, travel, and culture. The Stone & Compass aims to bring together people from various walks of life and create cultural understanding and connections. Stone & Compass is reinventing tourism by offering

people the opportunity to create cross-cultural connections through authentic interactions with local artists, farmers and educators. Stone & Compass offers programs that allow travelers to immerse themselves in areas including natural heritage, cultural heritage, the arts and education. The cultural center offers an array of programming which includes the opportunity to learn traditional crafts, sustainable development, organic farming, cooking and history of the region. The main retreat center is located in the foothills of the Balkan Mountain range and surrounded by lush natural wonders. The Stone & Compass retreat center offers a 4 properties that encompass over 2000 acres complete with historical architecture, an abundance of garden space and outdoor living areas, as well as a private forest to enjoy. The Stone & Compass is committed to preserving the heritage and culture of Bulgaria and thus donates funds as they become available to help local foundations in the Balkans who are working towards conserving historical, cultural and social heritage. In 2014 & 2015 funds were donated to the Balkan Heritage Field School to support the Tell Yunatsite excavation going on in July/August 2014. Also, as an FYI there are no street addresses in the villages of Bulgaria so our property is not able to have this field in facebook.
