From Ice Axes to Swimming Trunks! ❄️🏊‍♂️

Our crew returned Sunday from a legendary winter weekend at New England Base Camp. Here’s the "chill" recap:

• The Cabin: We spent two nights in the Sagamore. Despite the heat being on high, it stayed a "balmy" 50-60°F—perfect for testing those winter sleeping bags!

• The Saturday Pivot: We spent the morning ice climbing in a snowstorm, then spent the afternoon thawing out in the pool.

• The Food: After snowshoeing back to base, we refueled with a massive chili dinner and peach cobbler.

• The Deep Freeze: We woke up Sunday to a crisp 2°F morning, packed up after a quick bagel breakfast, and made the snowy trek back to Marblehead.

Huge props to the Scouts for showing some serious grit in the New England cold! ⚜️

MHD Troop 79 is on the move in Newburyport!

We kicked off the weekend with a hike through the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island, exploring the trails and spotting wildlife along the way.

Tonight, we’ve taken over MetroRock Newburyport for private climbing where Scouts are learning to belay, pushing themselves on the walls, and cheering each other on. The energy is high, the teamwork is strong, and yes, everyone is fueled by plenty of pizza.

We’ll be bedding down inside the gym tonight and wrapping up in the morning after breakfast before heading home.

Another great adventure in the books for Troop 79.

🏕️ Philmont Trek Highlights – Crew 722 Kangaroo 🥾

10 unforgettable days in the wilderness.
80+ rugged miles.
20,000+ feet of elevation gain.

The crew of 8 scouts and 3 advisors took on the super-strenuous trek, conquering much of what Philmont had to offer — from summiting Mt. Baldy (12,000+ ft) and the Tooth of Time (~9,000 ft) to hiking through South Country, the 2018 burn scar, and North Country.

We reconnected with T79 alumni Katie and Isla, learned about reforestation and conservation efforts, and enjoyed ourselves with exciting activities like rock climbing, a chuckwagon meal, shotgun, archery, black powder, and cowboy action shooting.

Evenings brought laughter and stories around camp and days were filled with perseverance, teamwork, and awe-inspiring scenery.

Along the way, we saw old friends, made new ones, and most importantly — built lifelong memories while growing into stronger young men and outdoorsmen.

👏 Hooray for a super successful trek. What a joy it was to spend two weeks with this incredible crew!

Day 3 Update – Crew 722 Kangaroo

A smooth check-in today at Base Camp for Crew 722 Kangaroo! We arrived early and had the great surprise of reconnecting with Katie, a proud Troop 79 alum and current Philmont Ranger.

We also met our assigned Ranger, Jace, who will be with us for the first few days of our trek. He jumped right in, guiding the crew through gear checks and helping everyone get settled before we took a well-earned break to enjoy some classic Phil-nachos for lunch.

The rest of the day was filled with prep: meal distribution, gear check-out, logistics review, and medical clearance—all passed with flying colors.

After a final walk-through of our itinerary, the crew is excited and ready to hit the trail tomorrow. We roll out at 1 PM and will share updates as service and trail time allow. Onward!

Day 2: Rapids, Views & the Road to Philmont

Today the Troop 79 crew took on the Arkansas River with a 4-hour whitewater adventure in Cañon City — 9 miles of paddling through Class III & IV rapids, and we’re proud to say everyone stayed in the boat! 🛶💪

After a view from Skyline Drive and lunch, we hit the road to Raton, NM for one final night in luxury (hotel accommodations) before heading into Philmont base camp tomorrow. Big day of prep ahead before we hit the trail on Wednesday!

Day 1 ✅ for Crew 722K

After a smooth 12-hour travel day from home to Colorado Springs, our Philmont crew stretched their legs with some awe-inspiring views at Garden of the Gods. A perfect driving tour (it was raining) before fueling up with dinner and getting some much needed shut eye. The journey is just beginning! 🥾🌟

🌟 Troop 79 Spotlight! 🌟

Head down to Goldthwait Beach this afternoon, Sunday, July 20, to check out the amazing new installation by Jeremy Barnet, Eagle Scout, Troop 79 alum, and proud son of Jessica and Andy Barnet!

Jeremy’s incredible driftwood sculpture is not only a beautiful addition to our coastline—it’s a celebration of community and creativity. 🪵🌊

The artistic design team created the 100-foot pop-up sculpture within an amazing 12-hour period. This will be the team’s third installation in Marblehead and its second at Goldthwait. Sadly, the beautiful sculpture will be taken down on Monday.

Read more about it here: https://marbleheadcurrent.org/2025/07/15/news-in-brief-week-of-monday-july-14-2025

Let’s show some Scout spirit and support one of our own. Great work, Jeremy! 👏🦅
