NOVEMBER025 2025 JIPOA EMAIL BLAST

SPECIAL NOTICE
Islanders, Mayor Starcher asked if we would please let everyone know the informational meeting regarding the Johnsons Island Water Project will be at Danbury High School gym at 6pm on Monday, November 3rd.

From the Board

Crazy! November already! It seems like I wait all winter for Summer, and in a blink of time it’s Fall again. But it has really been a beautiful Fall so far. Actually EVERY day is beautiful on our special island.

It’s ELECTION TIME, too! Please remember to VOTE! Although the JIPOA Board cannot make election recommendations, I am letting you know my “personal” voting preferences. For Marblehead City Council, I am voting for two outstanding ladies- Sarah LaMarca (a fellow islander) and Caroline Gatsch. I believe, personally, that these ladies will help Johnsons Island get more fair representation on the Marblehead City Council. Again, this is my “personal” opinion, not the Board’s suggestion. ( NOTE: A voting tip :ONLY vote for these two ladies for City Council and no one else for City Council. That strategy improves their chances for winning.)

NEED CHRISTMAS GIFTS???
We have a limited amount of Johnsons Island Wine/Drink glasses for sale. Consequently, we have to limit sales to 4-glasses/ family to allow more people to get some. The “suggested donation” is $10/glass. Only check or cash accepted. If there is a big demand for glasses we can order more for next year.
If interested, contact Lou Cardinale

Contact: Text or Email - Lou Cardinale (216)401-5660 or [email protected]

Roundabout Construction

Our exit off of Rt 2 will be closed beginning September 2 (Exit 125A-B SR 269 Lakeside/Marblehead) to begin construction on a roundabout. The detour will be the next exit SR53 (Catawba). Will last about 8 months I’m told.

Road Commission member appeal

Mike Kelty is stepping down from Road Commission. He has served as chairman for the past several years but has served on the Road Commission since its inception. The JIPOA Board has appointed Al Mazzeo to be its third member.

Glenn Beachy and Bob Cailor have both served a number of years as well and have expressed an interest in coming off the commission. So, we are looking for volunteers to serve. If you are interested, please contact us.

Danbury Township news

• You can bring loose leaves/leaves in biodegradable bags to the Danbury brush site at 310 Bridge Rd until December 1.
• The Village of Marblehead and Danbury Township have ordinances that says residential dwellings cannot be rented for less than 30 days (meaning weekly, weekends or daily). Also, campers and motor homes are NOT permitted to be used on property as guest overflow.
• Could the fire department or EMS find your home during an emergency? Danbury Township Fire Department custom makes green and white reflective address signs for $10. Call 419.798.5219.

PLEASE use SIDEWALK chalk ONLY on the chalkboard…i.e. dry sidewalk chalk. The liquid chalkboard markers do NOT come off.

Our chalkboard is meant for news about the Island, to welcome guests or for special wishes. It is not appropriate to write political messages on the board. We all have our personal beliefs and opinions, but please confine those messages to signs on your own property. News about island events and meetings take priority.

Also try not to be a “Chalkboard Hog”, especially on weekends. I know some of us write larger than others and may have longer messages. If you can, try to fit your message in a third of the board, leaving space for others.

Also please be courteous to the Connors and respect their property by parking ONLY on the driveways while writing your messages. We are excited to have more sign space for our families.

Walking and driving on Johnson’s Island

We continue to receive numerous complaints every year at this time from islanders, visitors, contractors and vendors about people walking, running and biking on the causeway. We see people walking three and four abreast, dogs on long leashes and baby strollers. In addition, people walk and/or bike facing the wrong directions. This is very dangerous, especially on the causeway. Rules of the road are walkers should walk and run FACING traffic and bikers should bike WITH the traffic. Our roads and causeway are not walking trails. Their main purpose is for vehicles. So please if you are walking abreast with others, go single file when a vehicle approaches. BE SAFE!

Also, drivers please remember the speed limit is 25 mph on the island.

JIPOA FACEBOOK PAGE

The Board decided to let the JIPOA website contract run out, because the cost to update was very expensive. Instead, we have created a special our own page called JIPOA and it is for JIPOA members only. We are posting monthly blasts on it, along with other news items. Our page is a private group for JIPOA members only. You have to ask to join. Once your JIPOA membership is verified, you will be officially invited to join the group. Carl Palmucci is in charge of this page.

There is also an island-wide page called JIHood for all residents of Johnson’s Island including JIPOA, BHOA and non-association members.

SEE SOMETHNG, SAY SOMETHING

Marblehead Police Chief Kenn Thellmann advises Marblehead residents to call the police right away if you see anything suspicious. He said if you “see something, say something”, don’t wait…call the police right away. Let the police decide if it’s important. Chief Thellmann also advises residents to “be vigilante”.
Call 911 or 419.798.5881.

Also, in this email blast is information on:

• Board of Trustees contact information.
• 2025 Calendar of events
• Causeway gate/roads info: gate codes effective and how to obtain a remote opener for the causeway gate.
• Trash rules, policy and recycling info
• JIPOA Member Advantage program
• For sale
• JIPOA minutes
Our next email blast will be sent out December 1st. If you have information you would like to include, please send it to Lou Cardinale by November20th at [email protected]

If you have any questions or concerns, you can call or email any of the Board of Trustee members (email addresses and phone numbers are in this email blast)

Roads/Causeway Gate News

Reminder- the Johnson Island Road Commission website is www.thejiroad.com

The gate code changes April 1 and November 1. The gate is accessible by the code, remote openers or paying $2.00. Remote openers can be obtained on your own at your expense. Contact Bob Cailor at 330.352.8455 or [email protected] or Glenn Beachy [email protected] or 614.202.4902 to find out the kind needed and the codes.

Gate codes for 2025 are:
November 1st: 1125

Remote Gate Opener Instructions

You can purchase your own remote opener(s) and program it/them. Many are doing so through amazon.com. It is called a linear 3089 gate opener remote available on Amazon.com for about $25 or less for two remotes.

Key specs for the remotes are 300MHz (sending frequency) and ten dip switches. Any unit with those specs should work. The sending frequency is located on the back of the unit. Check that it is correct when you get it. Some remotes use 290 or 310 MHz and possibly other frequencies—they will NOT work.

Programming is easy. Pop off the half cover, which gets you to the battery and dip switches. Set them so the first two dip switches are “open” and the last eight switches are “closed.” That is all there is to it.

The Road commission shielded the antenna to reduce sensitivity. That means the remote openers have a short range of plus or minus 30 feet. This will prevent anyone from opening the gate from half-way down Gaydos and screaming through at 50 mph, which of course people do when the gate is up.

Note that the remote works from either direction of travel, so you can use it to open the gate when leaving the island and avoid feeling like you are going to run into the gate before it opens. The remotes are particularly great to have when it is windy, raining or snowing. In addition, when entering you can stay in the right lane as you do not have to be to the left to access the keypad.

For questions call or text Bob Cailor at 330.352.8455.

Trash rules, policy and recycling

REGULAR TRASH

All Trash Bins are open for bagged trash and flattened boxes.
All items must fit in the dumpster with the door closed. DO NOT PLACE ANY ITEMS ON THE GROUND OUTSIDE THE DUMPSTER, including furniture and mattresses. Trash should not exceed the top of the dumpster.

The trash will be picked up weekly until the end of May when we will have it picked up twice a week. BTW- we had a very good trash year last year with very few issues, so we are looking forward to the same this year.

THE TRASH SITE IS FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL JIPOA MEMBERS AND IS UNDER VIDEO SURVEILLANCE. VIOLATION OF THE RULES WILL RESULT IN DEACTIVATION OF YOUR TRASH CARDS AND LOSS OF TRASH PRIVILEGES.
Please follow these basic rules:
• ALL TRASH SHOULD BE IN PLASTIC BAGS!! IF IT DOESN’T FIT IN A PLASTIC BAG IT DOES NOT BELONG IN THE TRASH BIN
• DO NOT PLACE TRASH IN CARDBOARD BOXES…INSTEAD ALL BOXES SHOULD BE BROKEN DOWN AND FLATTENED.
• IF YOU HAVE CONSTRUCTION TRASH (carpeting, wood, etc.) then please arrange for your own dumpster.
• JIPOA Board voted unanimously to immediately assess violators with a $300 fine, which is the cost to empty the dumpsters one time. If the fine is not paid within 14 days, the offenders’ trash cards will be deactivated and there will be a $25 per card re-activation charge.
• The sign states BAGGED TRASH ONLY. So, if it does not fit in a bag, it does not belong in the trash dumpsters.

REGULAR RECYCLING:
Marblehead and Danbury residents can drop off regular recycling at the Marblehead/Danbury Township facility at:

419 Bridge Road (Behind the Police Station)

OTHER LOCAL INFORMATION

TRAFFIC SIGNAL

A traffic signal upgrade at the intersection of State Route 269 and State Route 163 near Marblehead began in August 2025. Foundations and underground work will take place in 2025, then suspend until after tourist season before overhead components are installed. The new signals will feature flashing yellow, left-turn Arrows. The phase will allow drivers to turn left while yielding to oncoming traffic. Signage will be displayed next to the signal stating, "Left turn yield on flashing yellow arrow" to introduce the concept to motorists. This location was chosen for the signal because there are a large number of left-turning vehicles that travel through, and the existing signal needed an upgrade. The Ottawa County location will be the first in northwest Ohio on the state highway system. The signal will be a four-section head and will be phased as follows:

Red Arrow: Stop and do not proceed with the left turn.
Yellow Arrow (steady): Prepare to stop. The signal is about to turn red.
Yellow Arrow (flashing): Left turns are permitted, but drivers must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning.
Green Arrow (steady): Protected left turn. The driver has the right-of-way. Maintenance of traffic impacts during the project will be minimal with only occasional lane restrictions required.
