As 2022 gets underway, there are a few updates we wanted to share that pertain to Marblehead Harbor. We understand life is incredibly busy, so wanted to help make it easy to get updated and bookmark some helpful pages to become more involved in learning about and participating in discussions that shape our harbor.
1) The Harbor Study Committee is taking shape. If you've missed the news through various outlets, the Town is embarking on another large scale study (like they did in 2009) to assess and propose recommendations for a number of areas. A consulting firm has been contracted and many of the 17 person working group have been selected. We know 2 at large members are still to be appointed, as well as 2 Board of Selectmen, perhaps they will appoint at their upcoming meeting this week? Chairman Gregory and John Doub have been appointed to represent the Harbor and Waters Board. The full composition consists of (2 Harbor Waters Board, 2 Board of Selectmen, 1 Planning Board, 2 at Large (public), 1 Business Owner / Chamber of Commerce, 1 Rec and Park, 1 Disability Commission, 1 Commercial Fishing, 1 Sustainable Marblehead, Town Administrator, Harbormaster, Town Planner, DPW Director, Town Engineer). Keep an eye on the weekly notices for public meetings as there will be opportunities for the community to offer feedback to this working group which will help inform recommendations and urge implementation of said recommendations: https://www.marblehead.org/calendar-by-event-type/16
2) In case it wasn't on your calendar, the Harbor and Waters Board meetings take place, usually the 1st Monday of the month, and most recently was via Zoom. They are greatly informative and as users of the Harbor or simply individuals interested in learning more, save the date to participate: https://www.marblehead.org/harbors-waters-board
3) The League of Women Voters of Marblehead has recently started sending an observer to the Harbor and Waters meetings as part of their participation in many local board / committee meetings.
If you are interested in their summary of the last two meetings you can find the links below. The January meeting discussed raising mooring, private float and other fees. Salem Sound Coastwatch joined the zoom meeting for a very important presentation on rising tides. There was a proposal to consider renaming Parker's Boat Yard and brainstorming about improvements at Cliff St: https://my.lwv.org/massachusetts/marblehead/observer-reports/harbors-and-waters-board-observer-reports
