At 733 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 30 miles southwest of Marathon, or 31 miles south of Alpine, moving northeast at 20 mph.

Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph and nickel size hail.

IMPACT
Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.

On Tuesday August 11th at approximately 1530 MVFD was alerted to a dry lightning strike 2 miles east of the landfill outside of Alpine, due to its location being between the two departments AVFD requested assistance. MVFD responded with C1, Brush 41 and Brush 43 with 5 personnel to assist. Once on scene fire was scouted out and found to be in rough terrain about a mile from the highway, responding units made their way to the fire and linked up with assets from Alpine Fire. The fire was contained by AVFD units prior to our arrival but once on scene MVFD filled in to assist mop up. All personnel stayed on scene until extinguishment was obtained. Excellent work to AVFD for their quick response and knockdown of this fire. It’s always a pleasure working with our sister station. The fire burned approximately 5 acres.

*Attention*. The Marathon water department is working on a large water leak on the north side of town. As a result the entire community is currently without water. We will be updating with any information as it becomes available.

Today Captain Wilson accepted a donation of $15,400 from the Gage Resort and Spa, raised during their annual Marathon Songwriters Festival. We cannot thank the Gage and everyone who worked so hard to put the Songwriters festival on enough for this very generous donation. Through donations like these MVFD has been able to upgrade equipment and complete important training to better serve the community we all love. Thank you Gage Resort and Spa and everyone involved with the Marathon Songwriters Festival.

$15,400 was donated to today to the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and all thanks to Marathon Songwriters Festival and our amazing sponsors that made this happen!!

At last nights meeting, your MVFD responders drilled on “dirty drags”. This refers to the rapid rescue of downed fire fighters and victims in IDLH ( Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) atmospheres. During this training responders were instructed on maneuvers to keep the victims head below the hot gas layer to assist in protecting airways from thermal insult and toxic gases, while learning body mechanics of moving the victims to a safer location. Excellent job by everyone who made it out to train.
