Katherine Balch of SMART Plainfield kicked off our first meeting after summer break. We enjoyed our gathering with snacks and stimulating conversation, as always.

The Woman's Club of Maplewood had an amazing last meeting before our summer break. We had a beautiful cake plus a pizza party to celebrate the induction of 4 new members. PLUS, we honored Joann Aponte and Mary Lou Phifer for 50 years of service in our club to our community. You would not believe all the amazing work the 2 ladies have done and continue to to to help others in need, especially children in need. Our gift of a cake and some flowers seems so little in comparison to all the good they have accomplished. Thank You Joann and MaryLou. ❤️
We have a couple projects going on over the summer and will start back up in September with our meetings. We usually meet on the 3rd Friday of each month at The Woodland at 1pm. ALL are welcome to join. We do good work and have fun while doing it.

The Woman's Club of Maplewood had a fun, informative and entertaining meeting today. We had an update from member and Director of the Maplewood Library, Sarah Lester about the progress of the construction of the NEW Maplewood Library. The grand re-opening of the library is set for July 5th. The new building will have the same footprint as the old one (all of the historic trees around the building were preserved) but will be much bigger and will be environmentally and technologically state of the art. Solar panels will provide power and, skylights and windows designed to prevent bird strikes will provide incredible light and views of the park. Update your Library Card now to be ready!
We presented Sarah with checks to help fund the kids Summer Reading Program and the Ideas Festival. WCM has always been a big supporter of our libraries with yearly donations plus a significant donation to the Library Building Fund.
Also today. we had a wonderful presentation by member Carol Cornicelli on the history of the Maplewood Strollers, our local treasure, community theater troupe. Started in 1932 by a group who wanted to continue to be creative after high school, The Strollers has been delighting audiences in Maplewood with 2 plays, a children's performance, and a musical each year. They operate as a 501c3 and need our support so WCM was happy to present them with a check to help the show to go on. Jay Stephenson, a Strollers trustee and talented opera singer, who is involved on stage and behind the screens of the productions came with Carol and entertained us with his FABULOUS voice. The Strollers currently have a show at The Burgdorff Center. Their website will give you more info on how to get tickets. https://www.thestrollers.org/about-us

March was all about cyber safety and we are thankful for all the info. Officers Matt and Byron from the Maplewood Police Departmed gave us to avoid being scammed. Nowhere is safe from these criminals so we should all be wary of offers that are "too good to be true" and "requests for action" via phone, email, or a live person in a store or at your door. They also warned of devices attached to ATM machines or CC scanners that can steal your card info. If you see someone shaking an ATM machine in town, it's probably Officer Byron checking for for skimming devices.
Officers Matt and Byron also informed us of a new program for adults who are over 55 or medically impaired that gives access to the home in the case of an emergency where the person cannot answer the door. This will help a lot of people and save a lot of door being bashed in. See the MPD website for more information: https://maplewoodpd.org/blue-angel-program-1 -9e63-4be5-8a58-54d1b423047e

We didn't meet in January so we were excited to get together for our February meeting and program. Can you imagine a time when it wasn't proper for a woman to pursue a passion for creating art? Retired CHS art teacher Janet Mandel took us back to a time when that was true in the lives of artists Mary Cassatt, Bertha Marisol, and Suzanne Valadon. It was fascinating listening how these women overcame societal norms to create such beautiful work in a male-dominated field. The meeting also included a little update on our projects, and as-well-as happenings on the NJSFWC level. As always, we had coffee, tea and some yummy snacks, a book exchange and collected linens for AHS-NEWARK and aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Our next meeting will be on March 21 at 1pm at The Woodland. All are welcome to join us.
