First of all, your terminology is wrong and irresponsible.... This was in no way a lynching like in Duluth more than a half century later... It was an ex*****on approved by President Abraham Lincoln for those found guilty of r**e and murder of civilians, during a "massacre" to drive pioneers out of the MN river valley ... Between 500-800 whites were slaughtered in ways that would make modern day ISIS terrorists, blush ..
And then there's your use of "monument." The old pioneers association of Mankato commissioned a very simple inscription on st cloud granite to MARK the site of the ex*****on 50 years after it happened. It was in no way an attempt to memorialize what happened... Read their minutes in the archives of the bechs. Should we destroy those "minutes" too, as we revise and sanitize our history? For real historians wanting to research why one of the ropes broke, or what the rope looked like that was in short supply and had to be reordered from st Paul, moving the ex*****on date up a week or so, now we're going to turn it over to those criminals descendents to hide forever from history? Why them and not those slaughtered pioneers descendents?
The reconciliation agreement in the 1970s was supposed to put an end to this kind of bickering. The market stolen by Mankato mayor remains lost to history and he never paid a consequence for taking and destroying this special gifted item to the city from 1912. Should we continue erasing this painful chapter from our history? Giving Little Crow's scalp back to his descendents was probably the right thing to do but let's draw the line there!
