Nurses from both systems gathered after convention to talk about what the proposed acquisition could mean for patients, our professions and our communities & how we can build power together.

As decisions are made about the future of these healthcare systems, the people who provide the care MUST have a voice.

I look forward to learning more about what, if any, benefit this proposed acquisition will bring to Minnesota patients and Minnesota Nurses Association members. As this moves through the state regulatory and public review process I'll be looking for signed commitments from these corporate systems that there will be no service cuts to rural communities, no facility closures, no layoffs or staff reductions, and that all employee contracts and Union representation will be honored.

Minnesota labor Union history:
During this week in Duluth in 1912, 14 people were arrested after rioting caused by striking street railway workers and the Duluth News Tribune’s headline screamed “RIOTERS STONE STREET CARS AND CLASH WITH THE POLICE.” The strike of over 100 motormen and conductors began on September 9 after the Duluth Street Railway Company (DSRC) fired nine employees for attending a meeting to discuss a new union. After stopping work, the streetcar employees demanded that the nine men be reinstated, that the streetcar company recognize the new union, and that their 16-hour workday be reduced to ten.

The labor protections we enjoy, and even take for granted, didnt just happen. People struggled for them and passed them on to us.
