Defensible Space: Your September Check-In
Refresh What Summer Left Behind
If you cleaned up your property earlier this summer, you’ve already taken an important step. But by September, dry grass, fallen leaves, pine needles, and new growth can start to build up again around the home. With fire season still underway in Shasta County, this is a good time to do a quick defensible space check-in and refresh the areas that may have become vulnerable over the last few months.
September Defensible Space Check-In:
Start Close to the Home: Focus first on the area closest to your house. Remove dry leaves, pine needles, and other flammable materials from within the first few feet around your home.
Cut Back Regrowth: Trim back grasses, weeds, and shrubs that may have grown or dried out since your earlier summer cleanup.
Check Gutters and Roofs: Clear out leaves and debris that can collect on roofs and in gutters, where embers can easily ignite them.
Clean Up Under Decks and Stairs: Remove stored materials, dead vegetation, and other debris from under decks, porches, and exterior stairways.
Make Access Easier: Clear around driveways and address signs so your home is easier to find and access in an emergency.
A quick September refresh can make a meaningful difference as fire season continues. Keeping defensible space maintained helps reduce risk around your home and supports safer conditions for your household, neighbors, and first responders.
It’s always a good time to stay alert, prepare your home, and know your evacuation zone.
