🎖️ Memorial Day: More Than Just a BBQ 🎖️
Ever wonder why we get a long weekend in May? It’s not just the unofficial start of summer—it’s a day with a deep, powerful history. Here’s the TL;DR:
🌸 It started with "Decoration Day"
After the Civil War ended in the 1860s, the U.S. had lost more soldiers than in any other conflict. People in different towns started gathering to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags to make sure they weren't forgotten.
🇺🇸 Waterloo, NY vs. Everyone Else
For a long time, towns argued over who "invented" the holiday. In 1966, the gov officially named Waterloo, NY, as the birthplace because they shut down businesses and hosted a massive community-wide event way back in 1866.
🗓️ The Big Move
It used to be on May 30th every single year. But in 1971, Congress moved it to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend. That’s also when it officially became a federal holiday called Memorial Day.
🎺 The 3:00 PM Rule
In 2000, a law was passed asking everyone to stop what they’re doing at 3:00 PM local time for one minute of silence. It’s called the "National Moment of Remembrance."
Why it matters today:
It’s a time to honor the people who gave up everything while serving in the military. So, enjoy the burgers and the beach, but take a second to remember the "why" behind the Monday off. 🗽❤️
