🦯 Today is White Cane Safety Day!

The white cane is a symbol of independence. The idea is often traced to 1921, when James Biggs, a photographer in Bristol, England, lost his sight and painted his walking stick white so drivers could see him more easily. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed October 15 as White Cane Safety Day.

How you can help:
✅ Drivers: if you see someone with a white cane, stop and give them the right of way.
✅ Never grab someone's cane or arm. Ask, "Would you like some help?" and follow their lead.

Chapter 9: There Are Still Wishes Waiting

Ten years.

31 wishes.

Eight states.

Hundreds of moments we will never forget.

When we look back at everything that has happened since The Visual Bucket List Foundation began, it would be easy to focus on how far we've come.

But our story isn't finished.

Because somewhere, another family is hearing a diagnosis that will change their lives.

Another parent is wondering what the future will look like for their child.

Another child is dreaming about a place they want to visit, an animal they want to see, a team they want to watch or an adventure they want to experience.

There are still wishes waiting. 💚

That's why, ten years later, this mission matters just as much as it did when we granted our very first wish.

We cannot change a child's diagnosis.

We cannot stop the uncertainty their family faces.

But together, we can give them something beautiful to look forward to.

We can give them an adventure.

We can give them time together.

We can give them a reason to dream BIG.

And we can help fill their visual bucket with memories of the people, places and experiences they want to see while they still can.

Every child we have served has left a mark on this Foundation.

And every child still waiting reminds us why we keep going.

Ten years ago, we started with a simple desire to pay forward the kindness shown to our family.

Today, that promise continues.

There are more children to meet.

More dreams to discover.

More places to see.

More memories to make.

And so many more stories waiting to be written. 💚

It's held every year on the second Thursday of October. This year's theme is .

Here's a fact that stops people in their tracks: at least 2.2 billion people around the world have a near or distance vision impairment. For at least 1 billion of them, it could have been prevented or still hasn't been addressed.

The leading causes worldwide are refractive errors (the kind glasses can fix) and cataracts.

✨ A Decade of Vision. A Lifetime of Memories. ✨

Chapter 8: The Moments We Never Forget

When we plan a Visual Bucket List wish, there is always a plan.

Flights are booked. Hotels are reserved. Experiences are scheduled. Every detail is carefully considered.

But after ten years, we've learned something.

Some of the most unforgettable moments are the ones we could never plan.

It's the look on a child's face when they finally see something they've only dreamed about.

It's an unexpected whale surfacing beside the boat.

A family laughing together during an adventure.

A child discovering something along the way that wasn't even on their bucket list.

A quiet moment between a parent and child when they realize, "We're really here."

Those are the moments that stay with us.

We have received photos and videos from families that have made us laugh, made us cry and reminded us exactly why we started this Foundation.

Because someday the details of a trip may fade.

But there are certain moments you never forget.

The way something looked.

The way it made you feel.

The people standing beside you when you experienced it.

For a child facing vision loss, those visual memories are incredibly precious.

That's why we don't simply want our families to visit a destination.

We want them to fill their days with color, faces, laughter, adventure and moments worth remembering.

For ten years, we've had the privilege of helping families collect those moments.

And after 31 wishes, there is one thing we know for certain:

The best souvenirs aren't things you bring home in a suitcase.

They're the memories you carry with you. 💚

👁️ October is Blindness Awareness Month!

Did you know? "Blind" doesn't always mean seeing nothing at all. About 85% of people with a vision impairment still have some remaining visual perception. They might see light, shapes, colors, or blurry outlines.

In the U.S., someone is considered "legally blind" if their vision is 20/200 or worse in their better eye with correction, or if their field of vision is 20 degrees or less.

All month long, we'll be sharing facts to help build understanding and awareness. Follow along every Thursday! 💙

Chapter 7: The Courage Behind Every Wish

Behind every Visual Bucket List wish is a story we wish didn't have to be told.

A diagnosis.

A family hearing words they never expected to hear.

A child facing a future filled with uncertainty.

Over the past ten years, families have come to us at different points in their journeys. Different diagnoses. Different circumstances. Different dreams.

But every family has taught us something about courage.

Courage doesn't always look like being fearless.

Sometimes it looks like a parent pushing aside their own fears and asking their child, "What do you want to see?"

Sometimes it's a child facing vision loss but still dreaming BIG.

Sometimes it's a family choosing to focus not on what may be lost, but on everything that can still be experienced.

We've watched children hike mountains, explore new cities, stand at the top of the Eiffel Tower, see whales in the ocean, walk onto football fields and try things they never thought possible.

We've watched parents soak in every expression.

We've watched siblings experience the adventure right alongside them.

And we've watched families turn some of life's most difficult circumstances into moments filled with laughter, wonder and joy.

These families are the heart of The Visual Bucket List Foundation.

They have trusted us with their stories, their dreams and some of their most precious moments.

And while we may help plan the wish, they are the ones who continually inspire us.

For ten years, they have reminded us to see the beauty in today.

To take the trip.

To make the memory.

Chapter 6: It Takes a Village

There is a saying that it takes a village.

For The Visual Bucket List Foundation, that could not be more true.

Every wish begins with a child and a dream. But turning that dream into a memory takes so many people working together.

It takes the person who donates $10 because they believe in our mission.

The business that says yes to a sponsorship.

The people who attend Designer Purse Bingo, buy raffle tickets and support our fundraisers year after year.

The volunteers who give their time. The board members who help guide our mission. The community partners who open doors and help us create experiences that sometimes seem impossible.

And sometimes, it takes a complete stranger who hears a child's story and simply asks, "How can I help?" 💚

For ten years, we have watched our village grow.

What began with the kindness shown to our own family has become a community of people continually choosing to pay that kindness forward.

Because of you, children have stood beneath the Eiffel Tower, explored national parks, walked onto football fields, watched whales in the ocean, fed giraffes and experienced places they once only dreamed of seeing.

But even more importantly, families have been given time together.

Time to laugh. Time to explore. Time to forget about diagnoses and doctor appointments for a little while. Time to simply be a family.

If you have donated, volunteered, sponsored, attended an event, shared our story, offered a connection or simply believed in what we are trying to do, you are part of our village.

And you are part of every wish we grant. 💚

💚 Today is Usher Syndrome Awareness Day 💚

For the Visual Bucket List Foundation, this day is deeply personal.

Our journey began in 2015 when our daughter, Lizzy, was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome Type 2A, a genetic condition that causes hearing loss and progressive vision loss.

That diagnosis changed our world. It also changed the way we looked at time, experiences, and memories.

We began thinking about all of the things we wanted Lizzy to see. The places we wanted her to experience. The faces, colors, landmarks, sunsets, and moments we wanted her to carry with her for a lifetime.

From that journey, the Visual Bucket List Foundation was born. 💚

What began with our Lizzy became a mission to help other children facing severe visual impairment or progressive vision loss experience the people, places, and adventures on their own visual bucket lists.

Today, on Usher Syndrome Awareness Day, we honor Lizzy and every child and family navigating an Usher Syndrome diagnosis. We also recognize the researchers, doctors, advocates, and organizations working toward treatments and a cure.

Lizzy will always be the heart of why we started.

Because of her journey, so many other children have been given the opportunity to make beautiful visual memories of their own. 💚

✨ A Decade of Vision. A Lifetime of Memories. ✨

Chapter 5: More Than a Wish

When people hear that The Visual Bucket List Foundation grants wishes, they often picture the destination.

Rome. Paris. Hawaii. New York City.

But a Visual Bucket List wish is about so much more than where a family goes.

It’s about a child seeing something they’ve dreamed about while they still can.

It’s about parents putting aside doctor appointments, diagnoses and uncertainty for a few days and simply watching their child experience joy.

It’s about siblings laughing together, families trying something new, and cameras filling up with photos they’ll look back on for years to come.

And sometimes, it’s about the little moments no one could have planned.

A whale surfacing beside the boat.
Standing beneath the Eiffel Tower.
Feeding a giraffe.
Walking onto the field of a favorite football team.
Watching your child’s face light up as they see something they may never have another opportunity to see.

The trip eventually ends.

But the memories don't.

That is why we do what we do.

Over the past 10 years, we have had the privilege of fulfilling 31 Visual Bucket List wishes across eight states. Every wish has been different, but the goal has always been the same:

💚 Create beautiful visual memories that can last a lifetime.

And with more children waiting for their own Visual Bucket List experiences, there are still so many memories left to make.
