Chapter 5: More Than a Wish

When people hear that The Visual Bucket List Foundation grants wishes, they often picture the destination.

Rome. Paris. Hawaii. New York City.

But a Visual Bucket List wish is about so much more than where a family goes.

It’s about a child seeing something they’ve dreamed about while they still can.

It’s about parents putting aside doctor appointments, diagnoses and uncertainty for a few days and simply watching their child experience joy.

It’s about siblings laughing together, families trying something new, and cameras filling up with photos they’ll look back on for years to come.

And sometimes, it’s about the little moments no one could have planned.

Standing beneath the Eiffel Tower.
Feeding a giraffe.
Walking onto the field of a favorite football team.
Watching your child’s face light up as they see something they may never have another opportunity to see.

The trip eventually ends.

But the memories don't.

What does a Visual Bucket List look like?

It looks different for every child.

Watching orcas and humpback whales in the waters of the Pacific Northwest. 🐋

Experiencing the magic of New York City and Broadway. 🗽

Hiking through Yellowstone or Olympic National Park. 🏔️

Or coming face-to-face with a giraffe for the very first time. 🦒

Over the past ten years, we've learned that a wish isn't about how far you travel or how big the adventure is.

Then we do everything we can to make that answer a reality.

Chapter 3: One Family Became Many

When The Visual Bucket List Foundation began, we simply hoped we could make a difference for one child.

Then one child became two.

Two became three.

And before we knew it, families from outside our own community began finding us.

Each family came with a different story. A different diagnosis. A different dream.

But they all shared something in common: a desire to fill their child's world with as many beautiful sights, experiences, and memories as possible while they could still see them.

With every new family, our mission became even clearer.

This wasn't just our family's journey anymore.

It belonged to every parent who wanted their child to see the ocean for the first time. Every child who dreamed of seeing a favorite animal up close, visiting a place they'd only seen in pictures, or experiencing something they would remember for the rest of their life.

Over the past decade, we've had the incredible privilege of granting 31 wishes to children and families across eight states.

Thirty-one wishes. Thirty-one unique stories. Thirty-one reminders of why this mission matters.

And through it all, something beautiful happened.

One family became many. 💚

Chapter 2: The First Wish

Every journey has a moment when a dream becomes reality.

For The Visual Bucket List Foundation, that moment was Re*****on.

Re*****on was one of Lizzy's classmates and was living with Nystagmus and Retinal Dystrophy. She could only see about six inches in front of her face, yet she dreamed of seeing the world around her.

When we founded The Visual Bucket List Foundation, we had a dream, but we had no idea where it would lead. We simply hoped we could make a difference for one child.

Then our community stepped in.

Because of the incredible generosity of so many people, we were able to purchase a pair of eSight glasses for Re*****on, giving her the opportunity to experience the world in a whole new way.

One of the first things she did was look at her mom.

For the very first time, Re*****on was able to clearly see her mother's face.

It's a moment none of us will ever forget.

To celebrate her new vision, we surprised Re*****on with a VIP Safari experience at the Columbus Zoo, where she came face-to-face with the giraffes she had always dreamed of seeing. Watching her feed the giraffes and experience the world with new eyes reminded us exactly why this foundation needed to exist.

She wasn't just our first wish recipient.

Her wish became the foundation upon which every other wish was built.

Over the next ten years, that one wish grew into 31 life-changing experiences for children and their families across eight states.

It all started with one little girl, one community that believed, and one wish that changed everything.

Chapter 1: Where It All Began

Ten years ago, there was no Visual Bucket List Foundation.

There was simply a little girl named Lizzy.

When our daughter was diagnosed with Usher Syndrome Type 2A, our world changed overnight. Suddenly, we weren't just thinking about the future;we were thinking about all of the beautiful things she might one day no longer be able to see.

Then something incredible happened.

Because of the kindness of others, our family was given the opportunity to travel to Rome. It wasn't just a vacation; it was a chance to create precious visual memories together while Lizzy could still experience them. During that unforgettable trip, Pope Francis even blessed her eyes and ears, a moment our family will cherish forever.

That journey changed us. We were so grateful for this incredible experience and wanted to pay that kindness forward to the countless other families facing the same heartbreaking reality.

That was the beginning of The Visual Bucket List Foundation.

Over the past ten years, we've been honored to grant 31 wishes, serve families in eight states, and create memories that will last a lifetime. None of it would have been possible without the incredible support of our community.

As we celebrate our 10-Year Anniversary, we'll be sharing ten stories that have shaped this journey; stories of hope, courage, generosity, and the families who inspire us every single day.
