This week we will learn about a "Very Hungry Caterpillar" and how he doesn't stay a caterpillar forever - he becomes a beautiful butterfly! We will even do a fun craft that you can take home with you! And if the weather allows, we will go look for butterflies and caterpillars in our prairie and pollinator gardens.

Our weekly Parents & Kids Preschool Program will be held at the Gorman Nature Center on Wednesday, June 10th. We are back to having TWO IDENTICAL PROGRAMS at 9:00 and 10:00 AM throughout the summer months.

Please dress appropriately to hike and explore outdoors, including jackets and boots if needed. We will meet in the picnic pavilion, and we plan on being outside for at least part of the lesson unless weather conditions are unsafe.

Don't forget to bring your nature-related items for show-and-tell!

The Richland County Park District invites the public to celebrate Flag Day with a special dedication ceremony for our new flag pole on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Gorman Nature Center.

During the ceremony, we will proudly raise the United States flag over RCPD grounds for the first time. This flag dedication is in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary, and all American conservationists, whose legacy we proudly carry on.

As we celebrate our country, we also recognize those who have worked to protect and preserve our forests, prairies, waterways, and wildlife for future generations. Their hard work and dedication have shaped the natural spaces we enjoy today and continue to inspire our mission.

We invite the community to join us for this special dedication as we honor both our country and the conservation legacy we carry forward.

If you have visited any of the Richland County Parks over the last few weeks, you may have noticed a few new faces! Please help us welcome our new seasonal employees to the team. We are incredibly grateful for all of their hard work and dedication!

Peter Zimmermann – Peter has been with us for several weeks as our Seasonal Natural Resources Employee, and we are excited to have him on board! Peter holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and geology and has a passion for all things nature, especially plant conservation. His favorite part of working with the Park District is seeing people enjoy the projects he helps maintain, including our native plant garden, bird blinds, and prairie monitoring efforts. When he is not working, you can find Peter kayaking, caring for his aquariums, and photographing wildlife. His favorite native plant is the Three Birds Orchid because it only blooms for a handful of days in late summer, making it that much more special to find.

Don Mosley – Don is our Seasonal Maintenance Employee, and having him around has been a total game changer for the parks! Don loves being outdoors and helping make our parks a better, more enjoyable place for everyone to visit. When he is not working at the Park District, you can find him hiking with his wife, with Mohican being one of their favorite destinations. He also enjoys kayaking, camping, and just about anything that gets him outside. If Don had to choose a favorite native animal, he would pick the osprey because he loves watching them hunt and dive into the water while he is out kayaking.

Jonathan Medina – Jonathan is our Seasonal Trail Maintenance Employee and has been a great addition to our team, helping ensure our trails remain safe and enjoyable for everyone. His favorite part of working here is getting to spend time outdoors in nature. Jonathan has long enjoyed the Park District and even brought his children to Gorman Nature Center while they were growing up to explore and connect with nature. When he is not working, you can find him spending time with his family and working around the house. When asked about his favorite native animal, Jonathan chose the snapping turtle. With their prehistoric appearance, they are certainly fascinating animals!

We are thankful to have Peter, Don, and Jonathan on our team this season and look forward to all the great work they will continue to do throughout our parks!
