Thanks to Lion Dennis McGraw for helping build the latest ramp for Barbara Labar of Pineville, SC. The ramp was requested through United Way by the Christian Men’s Group which meets at the Methodist Church in Paxville. United Way contacted Ken Phelps of United Ministries who, in turn, called Lion Dennis. With help from the men’s group, the ramp was completed in three days. Barbara is shown here, grateful for a much easier way to get out of and back into her home.

We hope everyone enjoyed their long Memorial Day Weekend, and that you were able to spend it with friends and family. We also hope you have made some time to reflect on those who gave their lives for our country. Thanks to Lions Ken Buchanan, Dennis McGraw, and Scott Wannamaker for setting up and taking down the flags which decorated downtown Manning over the weekend.

The first week of May was a busy one for the Manning Lions. About one-third of the Club and a few of the spouses worked at Birdfest, the annual bluegrass music festival. For years, the Manning Lions have been managing the gate for this event. It was a little wet from time to time, but great fun! Thanks to the Birdfest organization for their generous donation to our club. Interested in joining us? Drop a line to [email protected]

Our guest speaker for our late April meeting was Mikaela Nichols, Vice President for Advancement for Camp Happy Days (and former College of Charleston basketball player). Their programs are designed to encourage kids as they navigate their journey with cancer. They provide environments that foster positive social and emotional interactions, reassuring the kids and their families that they are loved and supported. The Camp Happy Days overnight camp is held at nearby Camp Bob Cooper every summer. This, and all their programs, are provided to the families at no cost. Since one of the Lions’ global causes is childhood cancer, the Manning Lions are proud to offer financial support to Camp Happy Days. For more information or to volunteer, contact any Lion or visit campyhappydays.org.

The South Carolina Lions Vision Services Blind Fishing Tournament was held Saturday at Camp Woodie on the grounds of the SC Waterfowl Association. There were 23 blind or severely impaired people from around the state participating. The Manning Lions always play an important role in this event. Lion Joe McNeil coordinated volunteers and ensured anglers had sufficient fishing rods, tackle, and bait. The Vision Services staff provided a hot breakfast, lunch, and dinner for all in attendance, and they even provided a DJ and photo booth. It was a wonderful day, and we had great weather for fishing. Lion volunteers from around the state came in to help the participants with landing their fish and point scoring. Special thanks to Manning Lions John Burchell, Greg Gay, Jim Boykin and Richard Kump for spending their day working at this important event.
