This week we have a day of celebrating the achievements of the American worker and another in remembrance of September 11, 2001. The Lions installed the Stars and Stripes along the streets of downtown Manning to help commemorate these two important days for our country. Thanks go to Lions Ken Buchanan, Dennis McGraw, and Jim Teal for their time and effort.

This week we conducted student vision screenings at the Manning Early Childhood Center. The teachers and staff had everything well organized, so we were able to screen 376 children over two mornings. Of these, 124 were recommended for further testing by an eye doctor. Thanks to Lions Rick Kump, Jim Boykin, Jim Teal, George Fix, Dave Kelly, Greg Gay, Barbara Gay, and prospective Lion, Stephen Jackson, for devoting their time to this important service project.

The Manning Lions Candy Days preparations are underway. We humbly and respectfully want to thank all the local businesses which have supported this fundraiser throughout the years. Your donations for this effort enable the Club to apply all funds received from the public on Candy Days to our service programs, shown below. These aim to improve the quality of life for individuals in Manning and the surrounding area.

Manning Lions Club members will be canvassing businesses throughout September asking for their help. No donation is too small, and all are much appreciated. Each contributing business receives recognition in the Club’s publications and will be offered a decal to proudly display on the door or window of their establishment.

Anyone wishing to contribute through the mail can send a check to: Manning Lions Club; c/o Candy Days; P.O. Box 754; Manning, SC 29102.

Here is a partial list of our community projects:
• Provide eye exams and glasses for those in need
• Fund corneal transplants and cataract surgery for the disadvantaged
• Provide free eye screening for preschool and elementary school children
• Support camps for the children battling cancer and for the blind/sight-impaired
• Help provide leader dogs for the sight-impaired
• Help United Ministries and Meals on Wheels distribute food to needy families and individuals
• Build wheelchair ramps for those in need
• Collect aluminum cans for A Second Chance A Shelter

Another happy “customer”. The wheelchair ramp team completed another project on August 25th, building a ramp for the Johnson family. Thanks to Lions Dennis McGraw, John Burchell, and Dave Cross, and for the assistance of Jim Pfister, Hal Lowder, Ken Phelps, and members of the Union United Methodist Church. August 25th marked the Manning Lions first day of free vision screenings for the Clarendon County elementary schools. In the early morning hours, Lions Greg and Barbara Gay, Kelly Lombard, Jim Teal, and Joe McNeil went to Main Elementary School to set up. Using the Spot vision screening system, in just 2 hours they checked 164 students for problems such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, unequal refraction between the two eyes, eye misalignment, pupil size deviations, and more. Of these, there were 41 students recommended for further testing by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Next week, we will be screening the young students at the Manning Early Childhood Center. The Manning Lions Club hosted this quarter’s Zone 4 meeting, led by Lion Joe McNeil. Seven of the zone’s eight clubs were represented, and we were fortunate to have 1st Vice District Governor, Pam Ofsanik, and 2nd VDG, Melinda Hagins there, as well. This was a productive, informative, and inspiring gathering of service-minded South Carolina Lions. Each club presented their goals for the year, and they reviewed their community service projects and fund-raising efforts. We all walked away with new ideas and a renewed spirit of service. Thanks, Lion Joe, for bringing us together, and to Birdie’s Café and Creamery for the use of their room.

The sweltering weather may cut their workday short, but they press on in service to help those in need. Mr. Brewer, 87, was released from the hospital earlier this month and needed a ramp to get in and out of his home. Lion Dennis McGraw and Jim Pfister constructed all the platforms and ramp framed required for the ramp. Two days later, they were joined by 5 members of the United Methodist Church to place the platforms and ramp frames, and then deck them. They returned to install handrails, a gate, and a step for access to the sidewalk which the ramp was built over. We all appreciate the hard work these gentlemen put in, especially during this hot and humid summer. We Serve!

👀Who won the Outstanding Partnership MAIN STREET INSPIRATION Award...
🎊 Congratulations to the Manning Lions Club! 🦁
On the 11 federal holidays taking place throughout the year, such as Memorial Day, Independence Day or Labor Day, Main Street Manning has placed United States flags on display along sidewalks in its downtown district. As the number of flags doubled, Manning sought a community partner to help with this, and the timing coincided with a push by the Manning Lions Club to find new ways to enhance its community engagement.
🚨For several years now, the Lions Club has provided the labor to set out about 80 flags each holiday -- a critical boost for the Main Street staff to make the patriotic displays possible. Main Street Manning provides the flags, flagpoles and storage space. The value of the Lions Club’s volunteer hours in this project amounts to $1,670 annually and totals approximately $5,000 since the partnership’s beginning.
