I LOVE waterfalls.

Really. As in, will travel and hike for a waterfall, but don't like to leave my house for a fancy dinner.

I also DO NOT like rain.

Enter the conundrum. One can't have a waterfall without rain.

At camp, the beauty of nature is all around us, but we typically complain when rain interrupts our fun plans.

We've had a lot of rain in the last weeks. A big change from last summer when almost every day was sunny and hot.

In exchange we have had relaxing days of crafts, books, puzzles and games. Our campfires have been inside, but glorious.

And now, we have amazing waterfalls!

I might think I want all sunny days like last summer, but I am endlessly thankful that the Lord shows us blessings in the rain, as well.

Sometimes beauty comes from surprising places.

This week it rained. A LOT!

We were sad to not have sailing weather. To not be outside swimming and playing games. We had indoor activities planned, but knew that it just wouldn't be the same.

But, this is one of those times where the change in plan results in something beyond our original expectations.

Sailing campers spent the day learning kintsugi (the Japanese art of repairing with gold) and stained glass. Connected deeply to our biblical lessons of God making something beautiful from brokenness.

AND they excelled. Seeing the beauty even beyond what we imagined!

Today we had a sad surprise at the swim area. It appears a hive of bees landed in the water and a large number of them washed up on shore. While we cleaned the area for safety, we also found some survivors.

As we tried to gently lift them and move them away from the water, they constantly worked their way toward danger.

It made me think about how many times in our lives God lifts us out of temptation or danger, but we try to take control and work ourselves right back into the situation we were just rescued from.

And, like our diligent lifeguards repeatedly moving bees out of harm's way, our God continues graciously and patiently to reset us in a Godly direction- as many times as necessary.

Staff and campers learned about flexibility today... And Jonah. How fitting.

I've always loved the story of Jonah and the Whale, but when I was older someone challenged me to really think about WHY Jonah would run from God.

We don't always like what God has asked us to do, but if it brings his love to the world, it is FANTASTIC- as in amazing, unbelievable, profound.

Our staff get to do a great deal of fun things- tubing, swimming, hiking, trips to Niagara Falls- but also, they clean toilets, learn new skills, distract tired campers and repeat tasks over and over.

Today's weather made plans change, cut out favorite activities and stuck everyone inside together. Our campers and counselors took great advantage of the opportunity of being "trapped" to try new activities, work together and share the love of God.

Tonight our staff learned about teamwork and celebrating our different skills and personality types.

It's the little things.

This week was a marathon. With so many moving pieces and decisions to be made, it was hard to know where to look, what to do next. Or first.

I was reminded by young staff seeing Camp Vick for the first time, that God has given us an amazing gift. They saw beauty and potential rather than discouragement. They imagined children experiencing the wonder of God's creation.

And we slowed down to enjoy the opportunity we have been given. Sometimes, that means a few moments for berries.
