Attention Central New Yorkers: Our Deshaies Stroke Research Foundation, Inc. is accepting grant applications - Please Share!

This grant is available for basic science research or to the community for educational projects related to stroke. You are eligible for the Community Grant if you are a nurse, EMT, nurse practitioner, etc and you want to do a community educational/awareness program. You are eligible for the Community Grant if you are a non-profit and would like to do education related to stroke. You are eligible for the either grant if you are high-school or college student and you have a professor who can mentor you with a stroke-related project.

The application deadline is June 30th. Please pass it along if you know of anyone who might be interested. Visit our website - deshaiesstrokefoundation.org for more information!

We all know that oral health is part of living a healthy lifestyle, but this study takes it one step further and shows a link between the bacteria that cause dental cavities and a higher risk for stroke!

"The authors hypothesize that the S. mutans bacteria may bind to blood vessels weakened by age and high blood pressure, causing arterial ruptures in the brain, leading to small or large hemorrhages."

In a study of patients entering the hospital for acute stroke, researchers have increased their understanding of an association between certain types of stroke and the presence of the oral bacteria (cnm-positive Streptococcus mutans).
