A couple of weeks ago, I was working through Song of Songs 5:1-6. As part of my process, I will often engage with pastors and commentators who have gone through a text before me to find insights. I’ll be honest. That time I found none. They weren’t helpful. Actually, they were unhelpful, and worse, they were gross. When I was reading and listening to these people, I felt like I was transported back to high school when I’d have to say to people: “Come on. You have such a dirty mind.” I can’t even bear to tell you what they were talking about. You’d agree if you read what I read.
I find it revelatory that I had that very experience while listening to teachers in the Church and then came straight up against Song of Songs 5:7. I think you will, too, once you hear more on Sunday. For now, I leave you with this: this is a reminder that you cannot, and you should not, listen to everyone who has Rev. attached to their name. Some will be just plain—biblically speaking—gross.
Instead, the call for every teacher is to pay attention to what the Teacher, Jesus, says to us in Scripture. Pray for me. I hope to do exactly that this Sunday!
