There’s a little moment in the Song of Songs, just before the verses we are taking this Sunday, that will draw you to come to hear what’s next. That moment happens in Song 1:4. It’s this moment where the daughters of Jerusalem speak to the woman in love. They say, “We rejoice and delight in you, we will praise your love more than wine.” It’s quite a moment, in a way, because we become aware that the love of the man and the woman has - I won’t call them gawkers - onlookers. This is a consistent theme in the Song. The woman is aware of them in 1:3 and again in 1:5. That’s a strong, consistent start, right at the beginning of the book.
This is an excellent reminder that no relationship is an island. The relationships we have (or don’t) always ripple outward to all the people we touch. But it means something more here. One of the best confirmations that "he is the one" is if the wisest people in your life think so, too. Think godly parents, for example. That extends to our relationship with Jesus. The Spirit surrounds us with people, the daughters of Jerusalem, who look on our relationship with Jesus and say, “He’s the one you’re looking for. He really is perfect for you.” And when we hear that, we're that much more confirmed and settled.
We’re going to look at Song 1:5-8. As we do, know this: I’m adding my voice to the chorus already started in Song 1:4. He really is The One.
