Mankato East High School students from Jay Seiler’s class took a field trip yesterday visiting a local Habitat for Humanity build site, Minnesota State University Mankato’s Construction Management department, and Oleson + Hobbie Architects.

Students were exposed to local programs and engaged with area professionals to hear about careers in the construction and architecture fields.

Here’s our ‘mentor in training’ Hailey!

Hailey is present at all of our meetings and is a great addition to the team that keeps ACE of SM moving!
She’s currently a second-year student at Minnesota State University, Mankato where she is double majoring in Construction Management and Financial Planning with an emphasis in Insurance and a minor in Business Administration.

When chatting about her involvement with ACE here’s what she had to say -
“I have been involved in the ACE program for three years now; however, I have only been a mentor in training for two. Prior to becoming a mentor, I was involved in my high schools ACE program, so it’s been fun seeing things through a different lens and helping students through the process. Nothing compares to watching the “light bulb” moments as students begin to connect the things they learn in class with the topics we discuss in ACE. Many of the skills and knowledge I learned as a student in ACE I still hold with me as I go through college and into my professional career. ACE is truly a great program!”

This week Nick Freitag, owner of Niche Artisan Homes, took students on a virtual tour of three homes each in different phases of construction. Through this, the students were able to first, see the “sticks” or framing of a house. Then they were able to see the house progress to at about the half-way mark where it had sheetrock and some exterior aspects such as siding and masonry. Finally, they got to see the move in ready finished product of the home.

One student commented “it’s really cool to see how the house is progressing, its really making things click for me now.”

Happy Board Member Monday! This is Julie!

Julie Steinke holds a BS degree in Interior Design from Minnesota State University - Mankato and AAS degree in Architectural Drafting and Design from South Central College - North Mankato. Having accumulated a solid reputation in her 25 years of commercial and residential architecture experience, she is currently the owner/designer of Blueprint Home Design, a residential drafting service serving the southern Minnesota region. Looking to expand her role in the industry, Julie looked to her alma mater, South Central College, to teach the next generation of architectural technicians. It is this new outlook that led her to the ACE program where she hopes to introduce students to the spectrum of career roles in the fields of architecture, construction and engineering. As an ACE-SM board member Julie is excited to help build the bridge between education and industry on the local and regional level.
