On Monday, Dr. Terry Morrow, general counsel for Minnesota School Boards Association, spoke about modernizing the Permanent School Fund through the 2026 Constitutional Amendment.

Terry recounted how the permanent school fund has supported public schools since statehood, and the constitutional amendment voters will consider this November. He gave an explanation of the fund and talked about what voters should know before casting their ballots. Most importantly: not casting a vote is recorded as a "no" vote.

He is a former member and chair of the St. Peter School Board, served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for three terms and was a Nicollet County Commissioner from 2019 to 2025. He taught communication studies at Gustavus Adolphus College for 18 years.

Thanks, Terry, for providing the information that helped us understand the importance of the Permanent School Fund and this year's amendment question. Here is a link to his presentation: https://youtu.be/dSEtqRgq9A4

On Monday, the Mankato Kiwanis Club honored its first Student of the Month for the 2026-27 school year. Khya Culbertson, daughter of Tracy and Jack Culbertson, is a student at Mankato East High school, who would like to attend college, possibly at Minnesota State Mankato or South Dakota School of Mines, to study mechanical engineering.

For this year however, she is studying concert band, AP calculus, online creative writing, AP economics, and yearbook while doing community service with Youth United, Hillside Church, Key Club and Connections Shelter.

Extracurricular activities include Link Crew, student council (co-president), robotics, track and field, National Honor Society and mental health club. But the school year is new, so there may be more before she's done.

She has been recognized at state by VEX Robotics in 10th and 11th grades, has won multiple competition awards and a piano competition award.

Congratulations, Khya! As always, our students set a very high bar for those to come. She was introduced by club member and SOM coordinator Kathy Brynaert.

Monday was our annual visit to the Kiwanis Recreation Area along Highway 169. While temperatures were down over previous years, traffic noise was not. But we had a wonderful presentation by City Manager Susan Arntz, who gave us a State of the City report on these subjects...and more!
