Deep Valley Book Festival The Deep Valley Book Festival gets its name from the setting of the beloved children’s books (Betsy-Tacy) written by Mankato-born author Maud Hart Lovelace.

The Festival provides readers the chance to interact with their favorite authors and meet new ones. This FREE family event features authors and illustrators, book sales and signings, book drawings and face painting and prizes for kids.

Brett Ortler is a writer, naturalist, and editor based in Minnesota. As Acquisitions Editor at Adventure Publications, he has worked on hundreds of nature-focused books and is the author of several popular introductions to the natural world. He lives in Minnesota with his wife, two kiddos, and three dogs.

James and Maggie, siblings hailing from Minnesota, continue to reside in their home state as they collaborate as a writing duo. James Schmitt, an Emmy Award-winning videographer renowned for his coverage of high school, college, and professional sports teams in the Twin Cities, Maggie McCoy has held diverse roles throughout her career, from mowing cemeteries during her college years to serving as Board President of a multi-million-dollar non-profit corporation.

Meet Selma, one of the authors attending the 10th Edition of the Deep Valley Book Festival!

Writing is a passion that I can’t let go of. I’ve been a creative writer since I was a kid, mainly in the form of silly plays and creative storytelling. As an adult, I was inspired by watching the kids around me growing up and learning life lessons. I wanted to write about the challenges teenagers go through and provide a relatable resource for them. When I was growing up and facing these challenges as a teen, I wasn't sure where to go for help and lacked the confidence to find out. So, I just dealt with what was happening to me. If I knew the adults around me wanted to help, I may have asked. Now, I’m driven to help teens conquer the challenges they are facing by helping the parents and caring adults around them have resources to tap into.

Erin Makela lives, writes, and teaches in Worthington, MN and earned her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Whether she is plotting her next novel or her next travel adventure, Erin is sure to have a good book and a mug of tea close by. When choosing music to write to, her go-to playlists are Broadway show tunes and sea shanties. Erin is the author of the That Word Honor series, which currently includes Worthy of Trust and Enterprising and Dangerous.

Meet Stephanie, one of the authors attending the 10th Edition of the Deep Valley Book Festival!

Stephanie Logue writes contemporary fiction and creative nonfiction for girls and women who feel like they never quite fit in. She is the author of the YA contemporary novel The Right Kind of Light, which will be published in 2026. Stephanie's previous books include Not Without You (2024), and Yes. Every Single Day. (2023). Stephanie also writes the popular weekly Substack The Eldest Daughter Says, featuring free creative nonfiction essays in the same themes in her books. She lives in South Dakota.

Meet Judy, one of the authors attending the 10th Edition of the Deep Valley Book Festival!

Judy M. Kerr lives and writes in Minnesota. She writes the MC McCall series featuring a female US Postal Inspector protagonist. The third book in the series, Postmarked Castle Cove, released in July 2025. The series is published by Launch Point Press. A number of Judy’s short stories have also been published in various anthologies, including “Ruby Red Heist” in the Dark Side of the Loon: Where History Meets Mystery anthology published in 2018 by the Twin Cities Chapter of Sisters in Crime. She is a member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime and is currently serving on the board for the Twin Cities Chapter of Sisters in Crime.
