October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month to remember the 1.5 million babies that die each year, through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth and newborn death. Since 1988, many perinatal loss groups across the country have taken the opportunity
during this beautiful fall month to pause. remember and to honor the precious babies whose short lives have touched the hearts and lives of their parents, families and friends. At this time, we are organizing a Walk right here in Manistee, MI. Walkers are encouraged to wear t-shirts commemorating their precious infants. T-shirts with the Walk to Remember logo will also be available for purchase. We would also like to remember each infant by acknowledging them individually. Their names will be read as each family releases their balloon(s). On Saturday, June 11, 2011, my daughter, Katie lost her baby, Lucy, at birth at Metro Hospital in Grand Rapids. Her loss brought back so many memories of the three babies I lost years ago. At that time, it was customary to protect the mother by whisking the baby away. Fortunately, so much has changed since then. Katie and her husband, Paul, were allowed to spend as much time as needed to hold and love their daughter. The hospital staff was kind and caring with the entire grieving family. The Walk is designed to raise public awareness to ensure all families receive the same sensitivity we received at this most difficult time. Seems most everyone has a story to tell about their own experience or that of someone they love with the loss of an infant. The Walk is open to everyone so please pass on this information. More information will follow as event plans are organized. With warm regards,
