Sophia Street Community Garden: A Program of Manistee Community Kitchen

Sophia Street Community Garden: A Program of Manistee Community Kitchen Sophia Garden offers raised beds that are rented by individuals and organizations in the community. We encourage everyone to dig in and grow their own food!

The Garden is located at the corner of Sophia & Michael Streets, kitty-corner from the historic Guardian Angels Church, in Manistee, MI. The Garden was started in 2010 and is a volunteer-led program ~ a place where people gather, plant and grow together. The 4’ x 8’ raised beds are filled with nutrient-rich compost. They can be rented by individuals and organizations for $30 annually. Gardeners ha

ve access to on-site water, rhubarb patch, herb garden, flowers for cutting, compost bins and horticultural support. Gardeners agree to use organic and natural fertilizers and pest control. All are encouraged to help out with group work sessions whenever possible. Rental forms are posted at the Garden or can be downloaded here: https://manisteekitchen.org/gardens/

Sophia Garden is a program of Manistee Community Kitchen and is maintained as a model of best practices for community gardening in the region. We strive to improve participants' health through education and increased exposure to whole foods. To that end, we engage with other food access initiatives and gardening partners such as MSU Extension, SEEDS, Manistee County Food Access Strategy Team, District Health Department #10, and Manistee County Conservation District.

"Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle...a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud starting to unfurl. And the anticipation nutures our dreams." Barbara Winkler

On this Giving Tuesday please consider helping that dream come true for our garden. We are raising funds for a new native flowering pollinator garden.

A summertime favorite flavor ~ Dill!

Aside from being a necessary component to making delicious pickles, there are many ways to use it in both fresh & prepared foods.
