Starship Somatics engage our bodymindspirits as portals, as trancemobiles that honor pasts and jet us toward speculative futures, into the earth and among the stars, in flux and transformation. Our classes will use improvised movement (inner and outer movement, as is accessible and appropriate to you), dream journeys, writing, and drawing as our transportation devices: firmly grounded in the sensory immediacy of our beds, sofas, floors and windows, and flying wide to honor ways of being of all kinds.

All welcome, grounded in disability culture values.

Petra Kuppers is a disability culture activist and a community performance artist who uses disability culture methods, somatics, performance, media, and speculative poetry to engage audiences toward more socially just and enjoyable futures. Her latest academic study is the award-winning Eco Soma: Pain and Joy in Speculative Performance Encounters (UoMinnesota Press, 2022, open access). Her Crip/Mad Archive Dances, an experimental documentary, won the Best Artists Film Award of the Together! Disability Film Festival. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Visionary Trailblazer Award by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education for her life-long work in community performance. She leads the Olimpias, an association of international disability culture artists, and co-directs Turtle Disco, a somatic writing studio, with poet and dancer Stephanie Heit, out of their home on Anishinaabe Territory in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Petra is the Anita Gonzalez Collegiate Professor of Performance Studies and Disability Culture at the University of Michigan. She currently works on Planting Disabled Futures, a virtual reality/community performance project, the focus of her Just Tech Fellowship (2024-2026).

Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance of improvising/partnering based on physics of touch, weight, balance, momentum, stillness, flow, resistance, and perceptual play. Initiated by dancer Steve Paxton in 1972, CI continues to evolve as a dance research and artistic process. In these classes we will learn specific lifts and rolls and practice developmental patterns, body puzzles and forms which shape the body and space with odd timings and unusual perspectives. We will create duet dances that are dynamic and alive in the moment, becoming more tuned to center, subtleties of touch, direction, and intention, and explore musicality and phrasing. We will not only learn skills but continue to explore and discover reflexive actions of improvising.

These classes will illuminate the legacies of past pioneers as well as articulate and reform practices as experienced by the individual artist faculty.

About the Artist:
Gabrielle Revlock is a performer, choreographer, improviser and creator of Restorative Contact, a mindful touch-based movement practice. Her choreographic work depicts complicated but relatable interpersonal relationships, developed through meticulous character study and improvisational structures. Her work has been presented across the USA, in Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, Hungary, Russia and India and in NYC at venues including New York Live Arts, JACK, Joyce Soho, Gibney and CPR...

During this MELT Movie Night, choreographer and director Ogemdi Ude will show segments from her most recent project MAJOR – an exploration of majorette dance history, physicality, and interiority. Alongside MAJOR, she will show and discuss the work of highly regarded HBCU majorette teams over the years, exploring the history and transformation of the form and the impacts of it on the wider contemporary dance canon.

About this workshop:
We will work with a speculative relationship to one’s own body and the bodies of others to grasp what our bodies contain. Feminisms are the groundwork as we work through a variety of dancing methodologies. We will work through various systems of perception-action. Some dancing methods will be initiated from deep inside one’s internal organs; others will be formed in relation to one another as a temporary community. We will consider the bodies within bodies within bodies within frames in order to reflect on the social potential of dance/choreography–envisioning the future and navigating the now. Protocols will be proposed and further proposed. Relations will not be fixed in an effort to find new structures, new formats, new thinking or just understand one’s compositional proclivities.

About the artist:
Moriah Evans is an artist working in and on the form of dance—as an artifact, object and culture with its histories, protocols, default production mechanisms, modes of staging and viewing—and the capacity of the public to read dance. She approaches choreography as a social political project that means far more than arranging bodies and movement in space—it is an ideological pursuit capable of probing the intersections of embodiment, performance, and politics. Recent works: Remains Persist (Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, 2023; Performance Space New York, NY, 2022); REPOSE (Beach Sessions, NY, 2021); Be My Muse (Pace Live, NY, 2021; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC, 2018); Configure (The Kitchen, NY, 2018). I initiated The Bureau for the Future of Choreography in 2011—a collective investigating participatory performances.

About this workshop:
This workshop is focused on memory, nostalgia, and straddling time. We will uncover dances from our pasts as opportunities for transformed dancing in our present. What choreographies and genres live within you that are dying to come out? By engaging our past selves we will explore individual and group dance making – learning and creating compositional methods and movement and language based improvised scores. This workshop is for those searching for ways to reinvent their present performing body. I will ask you to regard the paths you have already taken, but have perhaps forgotten. The way you danced at a party in high school, at your elementary school recital, on your first day of college dance class – these are all valuable. Our dancing pasts will liberate our dancing futures.

About the artist:
Ogemdi Ude is a dance and interdisciplinary artist, educator, and doula based in Brooklyn. Her performance work focuses on Black femme legacies and futures, grief, and memory. Her work has been presented at The Kitchen, Gibney, Harlem Stage, Danspace Project, Abrons Arts Center, BRIC, ISSUE Project Room, Recess Art, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Center for Performance Research, and for BAM’s DanceAfrica festival. As an educator, she has taught at The New School, Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, and University of the Arts.

Writing for the love of it – a journal, a view, a sideways walking, portals and frames, a quadrant as a mountain climb. Exploring writing as dancers, we venture into the cave of dreaming out into the open fields. We then launch our minds in the sky.

This workshop combines writing and dance to expand awareness of the many worlds we inhabit. Through journaling, movement, and creative exercises, dancers explore working with the imagination muscle and fine-tune attention to detail. Using Chi Cultivation to warm up the body, moving to scrambling techniques for the day. Through perceptual writing, puzzles, and dance, new possibilities and perspectives awake.

🌞About the artist:
Sara Shelton Mann has been a choreographer, performer, teacher since 1967. She was a protégé of Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis in N.Y.C. before moving to Canada where fell in love with contact improvisation. In 1979 she moved to San Francisco, CA and started the performance group, Contraband, combining the principles of contact, systems of the body, and spiritual practice into a unified system of research. Among her awards are a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, 6 Isadora Duncan Awards, Djerassi Artist in Residence Awards, Headlands Center for the Arts Residency 2016, Lifetime Achievement Bay Guardian Award, 10 Women who made a Difference, Bay Guardian Award, and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award (2016). Sara has practiced dowsing as a healing modality since 2010, is a Master Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner, and has a Master Certification in Intuition Medicine©…
