Time for another composer spotlight! Today we’re highlighting caroline shaw

Caroline Shaw is a musician who moves among roles, genres, and mediums, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed. She works often in collaboration with others, as producer, composer, violinist, and vocalist. Shaw is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Music, an honorary doctorate from Yale, five Grammys, a Tony nomination, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Caroline has written and produced for iconic artists and ensembles across the musical spectrum, including Rosalía, Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma, Tiler Peck, Nas, the LA Phil, the NY Phil, and others. Recent projects include the Death of a Salesman on Broadway, Hedda Gabler at the Old Globe, “Leonardo Da Vinci” (Ken Burns/PBS), and more. Her favorite color is yellow, and her favorite smell is rosemary.

Text is such a beautiful and powerful component of choral music. This season, we’ll start spotlighting a few of our favorite lines from our rep. We’re kicking off with this lovely line from “Stars in Your Bones” by Joan Szymko, a setting of Alla Renée Bozarth’s poem “Belonging”.

New season, new composers to spotlight! Starting off strong with Alvin Trotman:

Award-winning composer Alvin Trotman is one of today’s emerging voices in classical contemporary composition. His music has been commissioned, premiered, and performed throughout the United States by ensembles ranging from middle schools to university ensembles and beyond into some of the most esteemed professional choirs and orchestras. A graduate of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, Alvin’s music continues to extend into the choral repertoire.

Over the past decade, many of Alvin’s works have gained widespread attention and, in 2018, he was commissioned by the professional chamber choir The Texas Voices to write a new work for their 15th season. Now with his own publishing catalog, Alvin’s music continues to illustrate innovation, from his Shadows of Twilight, in which the choir, with only vowels, journeys through the Amazon rainforest, to his more introspective piece, Autumn, which uses grocery bags throughout to mimic the sounds of leaves rustling. His music, often described as “luminous” and “hauntingly beautiful,” features evocative, shimmering harmonies and explores the full range of colors from the ensemble. Alvin’s works have been programmed alongside some of the leading composers of this generation: Rene Clausen, David Conte, Moses Hogan, Frank Ticheli, Ola Gjeilo, and Eric Whitacre.

Alvin’s music, though inventive, maintains practicality and beauty, which gives it the capacity to reach both the seasoned and first-time audience member. With his music in increasing demand, Alvin strives to attain a place in the forefront of classical contemporary composition.

One more YNYC welcome for the summer! We’re thrilled to have Emily Tong joining us as our Treble Ensemble Pianist. 🎶

Emily is a New York City-based pianist who strives to explore a wide range of musical repertoire with other artists and share these discoveries with broader audiences. A passionate collaborator, she has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, with ensembles including the Round Top Festival Orchestra, New York Youth Symphony, and Stuyvesant High School Women’s and Oratorio Choirs. This past summer, Emily was Principal Keyboardist of the National Repertory Orchestra. She has worked with conductors including Robert Spano and Michael Stern and is a recipient of the Dina Koston Young Artists Fellowship. When not playing piano, Emily enjoys calligraphy, taking walks around New York City, and exploring new food places.
