🦋The monarchs flying through the Flint Hills this month are part of a special “super generation.” While summer monarchs live just 2–6 weeks, these butterflies can live up to 8 months, long enough to fly all the way to the mountain forests of central Mexico and wait out the winter.

Kansas sits right in the heart of their migration path, and native tallgrass prairie is a critical refueling stop. Fall bloomers like goldenrod, asters, and blazing star give them the nectar they need to keep going. And in spring, their offspring depend on milkweed, the only plant monarch caterpillars can eat.

Blazing Star, standing tall against the Flint Hills sky!

Also called gayfeather, this native prairie perennial is easy to spot in late summer — its spiky purple blooms rise above the grasses and seem to glow at golden hour. Fun fact: unlike most flowering spikes, Liatris blooms from the top down.

Blazing star is a magnet for pollinators, especially monarchs fueling up for their fall migration south. Its deep taproot — some reaching 15 feet down — is part of what makes tallgrass prairie so resilient to drought and fire.

Every bloom like this one is a small sign of a healthy, intact prairie ecosystem. 🦋

The Peace Of Wild Things

What an incredible day at Wildly Connected on Sunday! 🌾

To everyone who came out, walked the prairie, learned from our vendors, and enjoyed the afternoon with poetry, art and music— thank you. Putting on events like this for our community, so we can all connect out on the land, is what it’s all about.

And to our incredible vendors — a huge, heartfelt thank you. It was the hottest day Kansas has seen in two years, and we all felt it. That you showed up, stayed all day, and made the most of it means more than we can say.

We can’t wait to see you all again out on the prairie!
