🐎 Horses of History: Snowman — A True “Rags-to-Riches” Legend
Some horses leave a mark not because of their breeding, but because of their heart — and Snowman is the perfect example. In 1956, Harry deLeyer purchased the plow horse for just $80, buying him off a slaughter truck and giving him a second chance at life. At first, Snowman was used as a gentle lesson horse because of his calm, reliable temperament, but it wasn’t long before his true talents began to shine.
Neighbors noticed Snowman repeatedly jumping out of pastures and over fences, returning home with ease, and Harry realized he had a horse with extraordinary natural ability. With patience, careful training, and an undeniable spirit, Snowman transformed into a show jumping legend. Over his career, he won more than 50 Grand Prix titles, thrilling crowds with his courage, consistency, and sheer athleticism. He competed at the highest levels, often against horses with far more glamorous pedigrees, proving that determination and heart can defy expectation.
Snowman’s story is a reminder that every horse, regardless of background, has potential, and that true horsemanship is about seeing it and bringing it out. Here at Kansas Horse Council, we celebrate the underdogs, the hard workers, and the champions of heart — just like Snowman.
