🐠 Meet the goldfish!

You might recognize them as a familiar pet, but goldfish are actually fascinating freshwater fish with some surprising abilities.

Goldfish belong to the carp family and can learn to recognize patterns, remember information, and respond to their environment. Their bright colors and graceful movements make them easy to recognize, but there’s more to these fish than meets the eye!

There’s always something new to discover when we take a closer look at the animals around us. 🌊

Students from Payne Elementary had the opportunity to visit West Basin with the Roundhouse Aquarium, where they could explore, learn, and connect what they’ve learned in the classroom with real-world experiences.

Field trips like this give students the chance to ask questions, discover something new, and build a deeper connection with their environment. 💙

⭐🌊 Meet a baby brittle star!

Tiny but fascinating, brittle stars are members of the echinoderm family, alongside sea stars and sea urchins. As they grow, they develop their characteristic long, flexible arms, which help them move across the seafloor and explore their surroundings.

Seeing a baby brittle star is a great reminder that there’s always more to discover when we take a closer look at marine life. Even the smallest animals play a role in our coastal ecosystems. 💙

🎣🌊 What happens to fishing line when it’s left behind?

During Coastal Cleanup Day, divers retrieved fishing line and other debris from the ocean floor at Manhattan Beach. While fishing line may seem small, once it enters the water, it can become a hazard for marine life and remain in the environment for a long time.

This is an important reminder that taking care of our ocean starts with being conscious of what we bring to the beach and what we leave behind. If you fish, always make sure to properly collect and dispose of your line and tackle. And if you see debris along the coast, safely picking it up can make a difference.

Our actions on land can have a lasting impact underwater. Let’s be mindful of what we leave behind and do our part to keep our ocean clean. 💙

🌊 Celebrate 50 Years of the California Coastal Act! 🎉

Join us on October 10 at Junipero Beach in Long Beach, CA, from 1:00–6:00 PM for a free community celebration marking 50 years of the California Coastal Act!

Hosted by the California Coastal Protection Network, Surfrider, and Azul, this afternoon will bring the community together for:

🎶 Live music
🎧 DJs
🌮 Food trucks
🎤 Special guest speakers
🌊 And plenty of fun by the beach!

Even better, all costs associated with the celebration have been donated, with no state funds used.

Come celebrate five decades of coastal protection, enjoy an afternoon by the ocean, and connect with others who care about California’s coast.

🌎🐙 Happy World Animal Day!

Today, we celebrate animals of all shapes, sizes, and habitats, including the incredible marine life that calls our oceans home. 🌊

From sea otters and leopard sharks to sea stars, nudibranchs, and tiny tide pool creatures, every animal plays a role in its ecosystem and helps make our ocean so unique.

World Animal Day is a great reminder to learn more about the animals around us, appreciate the incredible adaptations that help them survive, and do our part to protect the habitats they depend on. 💙

Let’s keep exploring, learning, and caring for the animals that share our planet!

For the students of Belvedere Elementary, a day at the beach became an opportunity to explore, discover, and learn about the incredible marine life found along our coast.

Getting outside the classroom gives students the chance to connect what they learn to the world around them, creating experiences that can spark curiosity and lasting memories. 💙

✨🌊 Meet the opalescent nudibranch!

Small, colorful, and absolutely fascinating, the opalescent nudibranch is a type of sea slug found along the California coast. Their beautiful colors and patterns make them stand out among the rocks and tide pools.

Fun fact: Nudibranchs are known for their incredible variety of colors and shapes, and the opalescent nudibranch is no exception! Their vibrant appearance is just one of the many things that makes these animals so fascinating to discover.

The tide pools are full of tiny treasures—sometimes you just have to look closely! 💙
