We help homeless pets find their furever homes. Serving the South Bay of Los Angeles County, CA. We are an all breed rescue.

Noah's Bark is committed to finding permanent and happy homes for the unwanted and homeless pets in our community. Noah's Bark is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit pet rescue organization based in the Los Angeles South Bay area. Some dogs come to us as strays, but the majority come from LA area shelters, all of which are HIGH KILL shelters. We often rescue the most broken and pitiful dogs from these shelters, the ones that would have little to no chance of being adopted by the public. We give these dogs a second chance at a new and loving life. Noah’s Bark was founded in 1997 by Lila Hemmingway. It is now run by Shelly Gomez, a dedicated animal advocate. Shelly was there in the beginning with Lila when the organization was first founded. We rescue and rehome approximately 300 pets each year. Our organization does not have a shelter where all of the rescues are centrally housed. Dedicated volunteers provide foster homes while our rescues await their forever homes. We have some very sad news about our sweet boy, Mater. 💔 After visiting a specialist yesterday, we made the decision, with the vet, to let Mater go. His jaw was so extensively damaged that he had actually lost the blood supply to the right side of his lower jaw. The bone and tissue were dead. The only way to move forward was to remove the right side of his lower jaw. And he would have to have multiple surgeries over the course of the next year on the left side of his lower jaw. The blood supply was compromised on that side as well, just not completely severed like it was on the right side. The vet specialist said he had only seen trauma this extensive 2 other times and they were large adult dogs. He had never seen anything like this in a puppy. And he said that Mater was in a great amount of pain even with all of his pain meds, but he was just a puppy and pushed through it because he didn’t know any different. He was just happy to eat and be loved. 😭
We are sharing this with you because we know you were on this journey with Mater too. We want you to know we wanted the very best for him and did not make this decision lightly. It was hard to let him go because I loved him and had grown very attached to our happy little hippo. My heart hurts but I know that we made the right decision for Mater. The last week and half, he has only known love and a full belly. He loved to be held and have the spot behind both ears scratched. He loved to just sit in your lap and stare into your eyes lovingly, just so grateful to be there with you.
I hope you all understand why we made the decision to let him go. And if you don’t, it’s ok. But please know we loved him very much.

Even though we did not have the outcome we hoped and prayed for, we still have to pay his $2,000+ vet bill. We have raised $890 so far. So if you would like to help us pay the $1,100 balance we would be so grateful. It would be a wonderful way to honor the life of our happy little hippo, Mater🤎

This silly boy finally has an appt tomorrow with a surgeon that can give us answers on how to proceed surgically. His surgery will be complicated and expensive but we are giving this little man every chance to have full use of his jaw.
Hopefully, Mater will be on the road to recovery very soon!

*We are so grateful we have been able to manage his pain so well but we are even more grateful he will be able to start the healing process very soon! Next week is the week!

Pebbles and Bamm Bamm are so cute!! They are so fun and absolutely love any and all attention they can get! They love to snuggle but are fine sleeping in their own dog bed too. They are great with kids and are good with dogs and cats too! We will be accepting applications on them very soon!

Mater’s “Origin Story”

So Saturday night I had a dream about a brown puppy that I was trying to save off of the streets. The puppy in my dream was a big breed boy puppy with a green collar. Every time I got close to saving him, something would happen and he would disappear. Just as I was about to pick him up, something would distract me and I would look away and then back to him and he would be gone. This happened several times in my dream. I was never actually able to catch him. And then I woke up and forgot about my dream.
On Sunday morning, at 9:25am NB received an email about a brown, large breed boy puppy! I saw his shelter intake photo and he was wearing a green “shelter collar”!! It was Mater!! I literally dreamt of Mater before I ever even saw him! Every star aligned to make sure that we were able to help him! I don’t know why, I don’t know how, but it did!
I emailed the shelter and set everything up so that I could pick him up the next day (I was not able to make it to the shelter on Sunday unfortunately).
When we rescued Mater, we were told he was an owner surrender. His “owner” got him on Saturday and put him with his large dog, who immediately attacked poor little Mater. They couldn’t afford any treatment so they took him straight to the shelter and dropped him off. I guess we should be grateful they at least took him to the shelter. But this whole thing was completely preventable. Proper introductions are crucial and puppies should never be left alone with adult dogs, because puppies can be annoying!! But I am grateful we are here to help our little happy hippo!
And that’s how Mater Tater came to be our newest NB pup! And don’t worry when he can wear a collar then we will buy him the cutest green collar ever!!

Can someone please tell Mater he is a very broken puppy! He is such a happy little hippo and wants to play and be a normal pup but we have to be so careful with him right now (and for the foreseeable future). He is on cage rest but he gets limited time to go outside and go to the bathroom and wander around. And he wants to play, oh he wants to play so bad! And thankfully Nico understands Mater is broken and he needs to be gentle. He has not even tried to wrestle and play with him, like he does every other puppy that comes through the doors! He just knows Mater is different right now.
Mater also loves to be held! He would love nothing more than to sit on your lap all day long but we have to be careful because we don’t want to create a monster with separation anxiety. Everything we do right now, is a balancing act. We have to be careful with his jaw, for obvious reasons but we also have to be careful with allowing him to grow up as normal as possible with mental and physical stimulation. We don’t want him to be a dog that has no social skills with people or other animals. We don’t want him to be afraid of new situations when he’s older. So, as you can see, everything we do is for his well-being as a total package. We aren’t just fixing his jaw, but we are also taking care to make sure he grows up into a happy healthy, well socialized dog!

He has three fractures in his lower jaw. One on the right, one on the left, and one right in the middle. We have spoken with many vets and not just anyone can do his surgery. He will likely be having surgery early next week. He is stable and doing well despite his injury. He has no idea he is a puppy with a severely broken jaw! He has a huge appetite, he’s on cage rest (except to go outside for potty breaks), he’s on antibiotics and pain meds. His pain is under control, which is honestly amazing. He’s acting like by other 6 week old puppy, which we are so grateful for! He’s not happy with his cage rest but he’s managing. We will have more information about his surgery and vet bill next week. That is when we are really going to need our NB family to come through for us and our little man.
