Even though it might seem like a lot of the momentum behind this past year’s call for change has died down, the reality is that systemic racism will continue to plague our community unless we take action.

The city of Manhattan Beach has yet to answer calls to rectify the injustices that the Bruce family and Black MB residents have faced at its hands for generations.

Join MB4E in signing the new petition by the Justice for Bruce’s Beach campaign and Black Lives Matter, which calls for reparations and restitution for the Bruce family.

Racism and discrimination are systemic problems in the MBUSD, and they are perpetuated by a lack of accountability for students, teachers, and admin alike.

These quotes from MBUSD students and alumni prove that students, especially those who are BIPOC, do not feel safe, much less represented or cared for, in our school district. We must fix this. The changes our Community Panel is fighting for include not just clear policies against racism, sexism, discrimination, and other types of harassment, but also widespread accountability measures and diverse and inclusive curriculum reforms.

Our Community Panel survey will end on September 1.

Here are 5 more reasons the MBUSD Community Panel for Equity is working so hard to reform our schools.

If you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention.

These quotes from MBUSD students and alumni prove that racism and discrimination is rampant in our schools. It is because of this that the MBUSD Community Panel for Equity is working so hard to reform our district to be an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all, with an urgent focus on the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students.

We must reassess the police presence on our school campuses.

This information was compiled by the Community Panel’s Committee on the Manhattan Beach Police Department’s Presence in the MBUSD, which will be meeting with admin next week to discuss changes to the MCHS Discipline Matrix.

We would love to hear from our community members about your experiences with or thoughts on police presence in MBUSD schools. You can (anonymously) share them with us @ bit.ly/mbhb-sro.

Breonna Taylor. Elijah McClain. George Floyd. While these may seem like isolated incidences, these are few of the countless Black lives lost to police violence in America. Many of us feel as if these are unprecedented times, but we must understand that these killings are explicit representations of the systemic racism that has endangered and neglected Black lives. It is our responsibility to understand and challenge the racist, discriminatory, and anti-Black injustice that has been present in our community. It is up to us to study our history in its entirety, unlearn our biases, and fight for equity and inclusion. The time to act is now.

MBUSD alumni, students, parents, staff, and community members have joined together to form the MBUSD Community Panel for Equity. Our goal is to reform MBUSD to be an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all students, but with a primary focus on improving the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students.

Join us in creating positive change and fighting systemic injustices in our community.
