We have issued a call to remove and replace the Manhasset "Indian."

After a Change.org petition received over 2100 signatures, we are following up by addressing a letter directly to the Board of Education from Manhasset and Native voices.

Uniting our voices as a community is imperative to showing the Board of Education that this matters to us and we care.

Let's come together to support the Indigenous communities of Long Island and elsewhere, demanding an end to the Manhasset mascot and the harms it is causing!

Check it out!

Manhasset Justice Initiative was interviewed by The Island Now regarding our initiative.

We want to emphasize that it’s not about avoiding “offending” Native Americans, but about respecting them, connecting with them, learning from them, and honoring them.

7 years ago, on July 13, 2013 the movement was founded after the acquittal of the person who shot & killed . It was all started by three phenomenal Black women: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi.

The Manhasset Justice Initiative would not exist if not for their efforts and the countless efforts of those who came before them. We emphasize that our efforts for justice are not by any means newly founded or authored by our members. Rather, we are a continuation of the movement that started decades ago and was re-ignited 7 years ago. We are here to build and support the efforts of Black leaders everywhere. We implore our followers to do the same.

Speak up for our Black sisters, but do not speak over them. Uplift their demands, but do not take credit for them as your own. Be proud of your victories, but do not forget the hardships that were endured to make your success possible.

We shall continue to work until there is “liberty and justice for all.”
