Club update for those that missed the story. On hiatus after January!

01/03/2025

Happy New Years everybody! I have a big club update, but first, some dates to mark in your calendar for January:

1/11: Bird walk at Fontainebleau State Park with Orleans Audubon Society. I think it starts at 8AM but follow OAS on facebook to stay in the loop!

1/18 Nature walk with Northshore Poetry Club at the Northlake Nature center. Time TBD.

1/28: Bird in Print with Pippin Frisbee-Calder with the Audubon Abita Bird Club. Join that facebook group and follow Pippin on insta! Pippin Personalized Prints

A naturalist, in the most simple of terms, is one who observes nature. Hunters have a rifle, anglers have a pole, a naturalist has binoculars—though there is much crossover between the three. Even though I had an interest in the outdoors, I ignored my subconscious naturalist for years because hunting and fishing isn’t my cup of tea.

Everybody, I think, is a subconscious naturalist. I firmly believe that EVERYBODY has a slight fancy for at least one aspect of the outdoors, whether that’s birds or plants or insects or reptiles or geology or weather.

This club was formed to bridge the gap between everybody’s conscious and subconscious naturalist in hopes of fostering the next generation of environmental stewards.

The club was also formed as a way to grow as a naturalist and to network my way into a career in conservation—and I gotta say, I actually did it! I’m officially Pelican Park/Recreation District 1’s first Naturalist and Environmental Education Programs Coordinator!!

While that’s exciting for me, it means club activities will go on indefinite hiatus at the conclusion of January, but don’t fret: once I get settled in my new position, club activities will resume! However, the club may shut down or get rebranded to suit my current position. I don’t know what the future holds, but I promise you haven’t seen the last of me 😊

I have so enjoyed meeting all of you at the meetings and field trips.
If you work in a related field, feel free to reach out and chat! Maybe we can work together on something. I have some projects in mind that I could definitely use some volunteers for, so feel free to reach out about that!

Yours naturally,
Alex Landry

It feels silly to congratulate myself but I was awarded 40 Under 40 in Edge of the Lake’s magazine for what I’ve put together with NNC.

Thanks to you all for making this possible!! This wasn’t even the best news I got this week if you’d believe it. I’ll share that after the holidays :)

Just a reminder that our next event is 12/14 at the Lake Ramsey preserve. Details/link to event in bio.

Thanks for and for helping with the club!! To for getting me started on this path. And to for putting this together and of course to my mom for being my biggest fan.

Mark your calendars for our next field trip! Link in bio to RSVP.
