Willpower can restrain behavior for a moment, but it cannot transform the heart.
This is why so many people feel stuck in the same patterns. External effort alone cannot produce inward renewal.

Scripture points us to something deeper:
“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

The answer is not simply trying harder. It is living in dependence on Christ, whose Spirit changes not only what we do—but what we desire.

Suffering can feel confusing, painful, and deeply isolating. But Scripture reminds us that it is never meaningless in the hands of God.

Often, suffering exposes what we depend on most, refines our faith, and draws us into deeper trust in Christ.

“He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.” (Hebrews 12:10)

God does not waste pain. Even when we cannot fully understand His purposes, we can trust His character.

The cross itself reminds us that God brings redemption through suffering—and hope through Christ.

We’re excited to introduce the official blog of The Nehemiah Project.

This space was created to provide biblically grounded articles on counseling, theology, discipleship, suffering, repentance, spiritual growth, and the sufficiency of Scripture for everyday life.

Written by Dr. Chad Wiles and featured contributors, these articles are meant to encourage believers to think rightly, live faithfully, and grow in Christ.

In a world full of competing voices, our prayer is that these resources continually point people back to the truth of God’s Word.

Addiction is not merely a struggle of behavior, it is ultimately a worship issue.

What we continually run to for comfort, escape, relief, or control begins to take the place only God was meant to hold.

Scripture teaches that the heart is always worshiping something. Sin promises life, but only Christ truly satisfies.

True freedom is not found in stronger willpower alone, but in repentance, renewed worship, and the transforming grace of God.

“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator...” (Romans 1:25)

Anxiety often grows where we feel the need to control what was never ours to carry.

Scripture does not call us to hold everything together, it calls us to bring everything to the One who already does.

“Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

Rest is not found in having control.
It is found in trusting the God who does.

Culture constantly tells us to look inward for identity, worth, and truth.

But the more we center life on self, the more unstable identity becomes. Feelings change. Performance changes. Circumstances change.

The gospel gives something far more secure.
Our identity is not built through self-discovery, it is received through union with Christ.

“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:3)

Biblical counseling does not point people deeper into themselves as the answer. It points them to Christ, who alone defines truth, restores sinners, and gives lasting identity.

We often treat sin like an isolated mistake instead of a window into the heart.

But Scripture teaches that our words, reactions, habits, and patterns flow from something deeper:
“The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” (Luke 6:45)

This is why behavior modification alone never produces lasting freedom. We do not simply need better self-control—we need transformed hearts.

The gospel does not merely manage behavior.
Christ came to redeem sinners, renew hearts, and reshape what we love.

Meet Mike.

Mike is the cofounder and Executive Director of The Nehemiah Project.

His heart behind the ministry is simple: God’s grace.

When asked why he loves what he does, Mike said:
“I don’t deserve it. And it reminds me of God’s grace every day to be able to serve Him in this way.”

That perspective shapes everything.

Right now, his go-to scripture is Philippians 4:6–8 — a reminder to trust the Lord, reject anxiety, and fix our minds on what is true and honorable.

When asked to describe biblical counseling in three words, Mike said:

“Deep level discipleship.”
Because real biblical counseling isn’t surface-level behavior management — it’s helping people follow Christ from the heart.

A few quick facts about Mike:
• Early bird ☀️
• Coffee with an extra shot ☕
• Favorite day off activity: Skateboarding 🛹
• One word people use to describe him: Intense

We’re grateful for Mike’s leadership and his commitment to seeing people transformed through the sufficiency of God’s Word.

Meet Chad

Chad Wiles is one of the cofounders of The Nehemiah Project and serves as our Director of Biblical Counseling.

His mission is simple and powerful:
Seeing God change hearts through the gospel.

When asked to describe biblical counseling in three words, Chad said:

“Biblical heart change.”
👇
That’s what it’s all about.

One of his go-to Scriptures is Galatians 5:1 — a reminder to stand firm in the freedom Christ has given.

When he’s not counseling or leading, you’ll find him doing what he loves most —
hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.

A few quick facts about Chad:

• Coffee: Always ☕
• Favorite book (besides the Bible): Lord of the Rings 📖
• Personality: Laid back
• Night owl 🌙

We’re grateful for Chad’s leadership and his commitment to helping people experience true transformation through God’s Word.
