A typical day at Kitty City is FAR busier than anyone actually thinks, involving more people than you know.
It started off with getting up at 6 AM to print off labels for kennels and then giving them to Steve who volunteered to take four cats in to get neutered today. This was followed by an interview from First International Bank and a video that they made for the Grant we just won because of all of your loyal voting. As soon as that was over, I received a call from a City of Mandan Parks management employee stating that there were cats that most likely have been dumped since they appear to be semi nice, but very scared at a boat landing 30 miles away. They have been there since early spring. We decided we’d figure out how to make room, but we weren’t sure how to do it and grabbed some kennels. We drove 30 miles and found the cats but they were way too scared of us. We couldn’t get them so we had to drive all the way back to grab some traps. We then drove all the way back to the boat landing, set the traps and successfully caught one relatively quickly, but no others so we had to leave the traps. While all this was going on volunteers were doing their daily cleaning, Volunteers Jen and Lauren were applying flea and tick and dewormer to the sanctuary cats while John vacuumed and volunteer Jodi was picking up the cats at the vet since I couldn’t get back to town in time to pick them up myself. Volunteer Jodi then proceeded to unload the food donations for the week that I will be going through and bringing to the Dream Center tomorrow and Volunteer Nancy was making sure the sanctuary cats had nice cold water and food. Volunteer Laura socialized with kittens so we can make sure they will be ready for adoption in the weeks to come. I needed to clear out a room so that if we are able to get all the cats at the boat landing, I will have room so Volunteer Cathy came down and took Dumpling and her seven kittens to her house to foster since we just adopted Ernestina and she had the room. Then I proceeded to get all the groggy cats situated back in their kennels from the vet and the one that we had trapped and then started doing the chores that I should’ve done in the morning, but didn’t have time as far as cleaning all the kennels, sanitizing , sterilizing, feeding and cleaning litter boxes. Steve had gone back to the rescue so on his way home he went back down to the boat landing to see if there were any more cats and we did manage to trap one more. That’s 180 miles we put on today just setting and checking these traps alone and still have two left to get. I’ve got everybody situated and I walked to my car dreaming of what I might make for supper while I sit down to text volunteer reminders for cleaning and make schedules. Our volunteers are awesome and they work and do this every single day. It’s quite amazing.We are so blessed.
