Today's program was Dean Johs, Head Coach for MHS Girls Golf since 2009. Dean is no stranger to Kiwanis he spoke to us recently as Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has worked hard to build the Mandan program and is quick to give credit to his golfers, their families and the golfing staff of Bruce Rauser, Bray Fox and Matt Rueb. The girls lead the State last year and their goal is to be in the top 3 in 2026! He keeps track of his past golfers and brags about the successes they all have in their lives! He's such a wonderful person and Mandan is lucky to have him!!! Follow and watch them on Facebook, MHS Braves Girls Golf!

Today's program was Janet Bassingthwaite the Director of Mandan Little Learners and the PlayLab. MPS fully supports the programs that includes Mandan Early Learning Coalition, Gearing up for Kindergarten, SPARK at MMPL, Family Playgroup, and PlayLab. The numbers are off the charts and they have been so successful that State and Federal agencies are taking notice and interested in replicating for other communities. We can't say or support this enough... it's SO important for our young families and to jumpstart our early learners!! They are always in need of donations to enhance and expand programming and volunteers .... go to Mandanlittlelearners.com

Today’s guest speaker was Mark Kielpinski, a retired 5th & 6th grade math teacher for Mandan Public Schools. Mark’s new hobby after he retired was learning the craft of wood turning. We learned that wood turning is very different than woodworking. Wood turning shapes wood by using a lathe, gouges & chisels. Typical wood turning projects include bowls, vases, spindles, etc. Commonly used woods include Maple, Birch, Linden, Walnut, & Cherry.

Mark became an active member of the Dakota Wood Turners (DWT), and they are based at the Bismarck Career Academy on the BSC campus. This club is approximately 28 years old. DWT’s mission is to pass the skill along, so it doesn’t go away!
In 2014 DWT got involved in a very cool project. They joined the “Freedom Pen Project’” which supports our troops, specifically the ND National Guard. They have also donated Freedom Pens to every submariner/sailor on the USS North Dakota!

If you are interested in learning more about wood turning, please see www.dakotawoodturners.com or stop out at their booth at the Bismarck Art & Galleries Association’s (BAGA) Capital A’Fair event on August 1-2, 2026, at the capitol grounds!
