We were thrilled to hear this wonderful news from Colorado Parks and Wildlife!

Working within a narrow window of safe access, a team of 10 CPW staff members entered the active burn area near Nate Creek and successfully rescued 103 rare Uncompahgre cutthroat trout. These fish carry unique genetics found nowhere else and may represent the last remaining native cutthroat population of their kind in the Uncompahgre River basin.

The trout were carefully carried out of the canyon and transported to the Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery, where they will remain protected from post-fire threats such as ash, sediment and debris flows.

At a time when so much of the news surrounding the Gold Mountain Fire has been difficult, this successful rescue gave us something to celebrate. It is a powerful reminder of the dedication, teamwork and care being shown throughout this incident—not only for our residents and communities, but also for the natural resources that make this area so special.

We applaud Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Gold Mountain Fire Incident Management Team, fire crews and the U.S. Forest Service for making this mission possible. Thank you for protecting an irreplaceable part of our region’s natural history and for giving our community a much-needed bright spot during a rough month.

Cost-share funding is available to help Montezuma County landowners control noxious weeds and reduce the spread of invasive species. Don't let noxious weeds gain the upper hand this season. This episode highlights the endangered Gunnison sage-grouse and how Bill Zeedyk, along with a host of partners and landowners, pull together to save this unique bird.
