Art Hill in Forest Park will be covered by a display of 7,620 Flags of Valor beginning this Saturday, Sept 5th, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the heroes and victims of that day, and honor the service members who gave their lives during the ensuing war on terror.

The flags will be installed on Sept 5th from 7am to 10am to include a short ceremony. On Sept 11th at dusk, about 7:45pm, a candlelight ceremony will be held. At 9:11pm that night, a reading of all the names will begin and continue throughout the night. The flags will be up thru Sept 13th.

Manchester was fortunate to be involved in this effort this year and in 2021 matching service member photos and dog tags for each flag. Be sure to visit this moving tribute, America's Heartland Remembers, which is displayed once every 5 years across Art Hill, and quietly experience the thousands of soft clinks of metal dog tags on metal flag poles. Drone deliveries in Manchester? According to a Post Dispatch story today, Walmart is partnering with Wing, a drone delivery service, to get packages airborne within 4 miles of various Walmarts around St Louis, where a new drone charging and launching station could be constructed for a certain number of drones at each approved Walmart. Manchester is mentioned along with Kirkwood, Maplewood and St Charles as potential locations.

Each drone can carry between 2 and 5 lbs, and travel 55 to 60 mph in a fly zone between 150 to 200 feet above ground. Packages are then lowered by a winch to the property address. It would be a nice touch if they took a photo and sent to the receiver at the time of delivery.

Wing says it has made more than 1 million home deliveries, calls itself the global leader, and has FAA certifications. Although the drones are self-piloting, there is a team of pilots on standby to intervene if necessary. On Wing's website, they have 5 cities across the south listed as currently operational, and 12 more listed as Coming Soon, including STL. And it's not just Walmart, they deliver food and healthcare items as well. Maybe this becomes a new request when home buying, is to be within drone delivery distance!

The Original Shawarma House did it! They are expanding and taking over the empty building that for years was the vacated Dr Johns - the pink one - at the western edge of Manchester across from the old Hobby Lobby and the newer Panera, that was possibly the most controversial business that has been in our town.

Shawarma is a stacked meat on a rotisserie that is slowly roasted and shaved off as it crisps, then spiced and served in a wrap or plated. It is a Middle Eastern food (and quite good!). Their current business at Lindy and Manchester Rd in Wi******er is still open, just a block away from the newer space.

Everyone has a favorite BBQ place. Mine is Dalie's Smokehouse, and they just made an exciting announcement - they are expanding their location at Big Bend and Dougherty Ferry! Here are some of the details from their page this weekend, and the new footprint they shared:

"We’re nearly doubling our total space so we can fit more of you, more kitchen toys, & more BBQ than ever before. We’ll be posting updates here on Facebook, Instagram, and our website as things progress. Heads up — there will be a handful of random days where we’ll need to close for plumbing work, major demo, etc. Some of those will just be dining room closures, with to-go still totally available, and depending on weather, we’re hoping to keep the patio open too."

Dalie's was founded in 2015 by Pappy's and Bogart's co-owners Mike Emerson and Skip Steele. Dalie's chef and co-owner Craig Basler has been with them from the beginning. They share a similar menu and recipes with their BBQ sisters, but different. Fun fact, the name comes from Skip's grandfather Joe Dalie Wells, which also gave birth to their Papa Joe's sauce (Yum!). They also offer catering, smoked Thanksgiving turkeys, and bulk orders.

The Old Schoolhouse public hearing is back on for July 20th, this Monday at 7pm at the Justice Center/ Police Facility, 200 Highlands Blvd. I expect a substantial turnout from the public on this issue, as there has been an organized opposition from the immediate neighborhood.

This hearing was originally scheduled for early June, but was postponed to gather more information. The potential purchaser of the Schoolhouse, Suntrup Automotive, held an open house at the red brick historic building on Henry Ave on June 10th to lay out his plans for the property. The plans will keep the existing historic structure, add onto it, expand the parking lot and erect a privacy fence.

It is currently under contract to purchase with a list price of $1,250,000, but subject to a Special Use Permit to be authorized by the Manchester City Board.

There's a new taco eatery nearby, called Guaco Taco. It recently opened in Wi******er, just west of Baxter on Manchester Rd. It is a new concept from the Lou Restaurant Group, owners of the U-Kraft Brunch Cafes in Chesterfield and Downtown STL. The menu includes tortas, rice bowls, ceviche, soups and salads.

This space previously held Tacos 4 Life briefly and a Breadco before that. Give these local owners a try!

Traffic has been backing up along Manchester Rd for over a month now. There are 2 major projects happening: Manchester city is replacing and adding high visibility crosswalks and ADA compliant sidewalks on the north and south sides from 141 to Baxter Rd this year. Similar work will extend east of 141 in 2028. A pedestrian bridge will be installed over Grand Glaize creek at Baxter: https://www.manchestermo.gov/1171/Manchester-Road-Pedestrian-Improvement-P

The MO Dept of Transportation is resurfacing the road from 270 to 141, upgrading sidewalks and crosswalks to ADA standards, and working on the box culverts, where creeks run under. To add a little spice, the Weidman bridge over the Grand Glaize has a single lane stoplight that allows two way traffic, controlled by St Louis County just south of Manchester Rd due to deteriorated bridge supports. Although it adds an extra minute or 3, this type of work must happen periodically to keep our area infrastructure in good shape. You may want to map your destination before you go, to determine best route and expected delays. There are currently no left turns in or out of Dietrich Rd onto Manchester, only right turns.

We had a real gully washer on July 4th, pushing the Grand Glaize creek out of it banks in and around our downtown area. So much for my Riverwalk idea! This happens occasionally upon a heavy burst of rain, which we had up to 2 inches in a short period on Saturday, although the city still had its fireworks display that night!

Pictured are the lower parking lot of Culver's, the restaurant appeared untouched, and the ballfields, which must have been completely covered, both of which back up to the creek.

Celebrate Independence Day when America turns 250 this Saturday at Schroeder Park! Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and dancing shoes for a festive evening beginning with a free concert from Butch Wax and the Hollywoods from 6–9 p.m. at the main Amphitheater. Following the concert, the City’s annual fireworks display will start at dark.

Concessions and b**r sales will be available throughout the evening until 9 p.m. Outside alcohol is not permitted inside the park.
