What changes when a student can count on a meal at school?

In Marsabit County, our school feeding program helps children stay in class, focus on their lessons, and keep learning when hunger might otherwise keep them home.

We are proud to be walking alongside communities in Kenya’s drylands, where one nutritious meal a day supports attendance, concentration, and well-being.

Together, we are strengthening the conditions for learning, one school day at a time.

Menstrual hygiene is not a one-day event. It is a year-round commitment.

At KDEF, we don’t believe in turning the supply of sanitary pads into a ceremony, a photo opportunity, or a one-day event.

We work with 2,145 girls whom we know — and who know us.

For an entire year, we consistently provide high-quality sanitary pads, based on the individual needs of the girls we support. But the pads are only part of the program.

We train, guide and educate girls on menstrual hygiene, so they understand their bodies and can manage their periods with dignity and confidence.

And importantly, we measure the impact.

We track school attendance because the real question is not “How many pads did we distribute?”

The real question is:

“Are our girls staying in school?”

That is what sustainable menstrual hygiene support should look like — not a box of pads handed over for a photograph, but a girl supported month after month, year after year, with the goal of keeping her healthy, confident and in school.

So, if you are supplying sanitary pads to schools around South Horr, Korr, Ngurunit, Loiyangalani, Gatab or going into Moite, please ask:

“Is KDEF already taking care of this important need?”

We may already be supporting the girls in that school — and we believe that coordination means more girls can be reached, resources can be used better, and no girl is left behind.

Because for us, menstrual hygiene is not an event. It is part of keeping a girl in school.

What keeps students out of school in Kenya’s drylands?
Sometimes, it is the missing classroom itself.

We are proud to build classrooms, staff quarters, and kitchens in remote areas like Marsabit County.
These spaces help more children, including girls and pastoralist children, learn in safe and supportive environments.

Since 2010, we have focused on building the infrastructure schools need in remote, arid communities.
Real impact is possible when practical investment opens the door to education.

If you would like to help build more classrooms, your donation goes directly to school construction:

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn with confidence and dignity.

Through its hygiene initiatives, KDEF helps remove barriers that can prevent girls from fully participating in school. By supporting menstrual health education and access to essential supplies, KDEF helps more girls stay in the classroom and continue pursuing their goals.

Because when girls can learn, communities grow stronger.

Every classroom is filled with possibilities.

When children have access to quality education, they gain the knowledge, confidence, and skills to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities. That's why KDEF works to remove barriers to education and create opportunities that last a lifetime.

Together, we can help open more classroom doors.

A nutritious meal can make a meaningful difference in a student's day.

When children have access to healthy meals at school, they're better prepared to focus, participate, and succeed in the classroom. KDEF's school feeding program helps ensure students have the nourishment they need to learn and thrive.

Together, we can help fuel brighter futures.

Today, Kenya Drylands Education Fund (KDEF) and the County Government of Samburu formally renewed our partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the delivery and monitoring of the School Feeding Programme for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres across Samburu County.

This partnership is about more than food—it is about giving children the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through this collaboration, KDEF will support the transportation and independent monitoring of food supplies to ECD centres, working closely with the County Government to ensure that the food reaches the children it is intended for. This programme is currently benefiting 40,800 children across Samburu County, ensuring consistent access to nutritious meals that support learning and development.

We are grateful to the County Government of Samburu, led by H.E. the Governor and the County Executive leadership, for their continued partnership and commitment to the wellbeing of our children. We also appreciate the participation of senior County officials, partners and stakeholders who joined us today.

KDEF remains committed to working with communities and government to improve education outcomes in the drylands.

A scholarship is more than financial support. It's an investment in a student's future.

For many young people in Northern Kenya, the cost of education can be a barrier to reaching their goals. KDEF scholarships help students access high school and college, giving them the opportunity to learn, grow, and build brighter futures.
Together, we can help open doors to lifelong opportunities.

Imagine this:
A student in Kenya’s drylands, stepping into the classroom with renewed confidence. 📚

While we can’t share a verified individual story here, we can say this clearly.
KDEF’s workshops are designed to give students guidance, motivation, and life skills that support their education journey.

We support students.
We invest in opportunity.
We’re building brighter futures.
