Introduce New Trail

On Saturday, Sept 28th at 1pm, members of the Manchester Conservation Commission will lead a p***c walk through the newly expanded Manchester Woods town trail system. The Manchester Woods trail system is a non-motorized recreational trail system for walking/hiking, mountain biking, trail running, wildlife viewing, snowshoeing/XC-skiing and similar activities. The approximate 4-mile loop is adjacent to the Hallowell Recreational Area (the Res).
The Manchester town forest consists of several sections including the Kerns Hill Connector (KHC); the “Pipeline” utility right-of-way; and “Rocks and Crafts” parts one and two. (more info below)

According to MCC chair Jeff Janel, the Commission will be introducing the newly built “Rocks and Crafts” approximately one mile of moderate grade singletrack trail suitable for mountain biking, hiking/walking/running, winter activities, and wildlife viewing. The trail, constructed by CeMENEMBA’s summer trail crew (cemenemba.org), consists of both machine-built and hand-built trail incorporating natural features, innovative bridges, and creative rock cairns. The trail is suitable for all mountain bike skill levels. Rocks and Crafts was funded through FHWA’s Recreational Trail Program grant program administered by the Maine Dept. of Conservation.

Anyone interested should meet at the Kerns Hill parking area, 325 Kerns Hill Road. While the entire loop is approximately four miles, there also is a shorter optional walk. For more information, contact the Manchester town office at 622-1894 or Garry Hinkley,

January 11th public workshop for the Community Resiliency Grant program. The program addresses various aspects of climate change, and makes the town eligible for various grants to address the effects and to mitigate climate change. We want public input on the steps the town should take. Please see the press release below. Additional information and he self assessments are posted to the town website. Manchester, Maine 04351 (govoffice2.com) If you cannot attend in person, a Zoom option is available.

Manchester to Hold Community Resiliency Partnership Public Workshop

Manchester residents will have an opportunity to prioritize actions pursuant to the Community Resiliency Partnership Program (CRPP). Successful enrollment in the program allows towns to receive grant funding of up to $50,000 from the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future to fund projects to provide technical assistance to combat and mitigate climate change. Manchester will hold a public workshop on January 11 at 6 PM at the Town Office.

To qualify for CRPP enrollment, a town must adopt an enabling resolution, hold a public workshop, and complete two self-assessments typically through meetings with town officials usually including chairs of various boards and committees. Manchester’s first self-assessment concerned an evaluation of resilience in existing planning, and the top priorities from this effort were: update the Comprehensive Plan, develop a vulnerability assessment that includes infrastructure, and increase transportation safety, bike and pedestrian accommodation, and public transit. A second self-assessment concerned community resilience actions that have been completed, are in progress, or are future priorities.

Manchester’s self-assessment and action documents have been posted to the town’s website Manchester.govoffice2.com. The January 11th meeting is open to all residents and may be joined in person or by zoom. For more information, contact the town office at 207/622-1894.
