Hi Manchester Family!

I've recently planted zucchini straight into my garden bed and it has been a joy watching them grow. Plenty of squash blossoms that I have some yummy ideas for. But, I wanted to remind you of the tips for growing zucchini that I've mentioned before!

5 quick and helpful facts about growing zucchini:

🌿Zucchini grows fast: You can harvest it about 45–60 days after planting, and once it starts producing, it really takes off!

🌿They need space: Zucchini plants grow wide and bushy, so give each plant at least 2 to 3 feet of space to spread out.

🌿Pollination is key: Zucchini has separate male and female flowers. Bees and other pollinators are essential for fruit to form. No bees? You can hand-pollinate with a cotton swab or soft brush!

🌿Harvest young for flavor: For the best taste and texture, pick zucchini when they’re 6–8 inches long. Letting them get huge can make them watery and seedy.

🌿One plant goes a long way: A single healthy zucchini plant can produce 10–20 fruits or more in a season.

☀️ Hello, Summer! 🌿

The first day of summer is here and so is the season of long days, juicy tomatoes, and big garden energy!

Here are a few ways to help your garden thrive during the summer heat:

- Water early, water deep: Beat the heat by watering in the morning. Aim for the base of plants to avoid scorching the leaves or inviting mildew.

- Mulch = magic: A little straw or mulch around your plants keeps moisture in and w**ds out. It’s a garden game-changer!

- Keep an eye on fast growers: Zucchini, okra, and cucumbers love this weather and can grow wild. Harvest often to keep plants healthy and producing.

- Check in weekly: A few minutes each week goes a long way. Trim, w**d, harvest, or just say hi to your plot because your plants (and neighbors) will thank you!

Let’s keep growing strong, together. Happy Summer, Manchester! 🌞

🥬 Let's Chat Caring for Our Collards! 🥬

Collards are looking beautiful in the beds right now, and with a little love, they’ll keep producing through the season. Here’s how to help them thrive:

- Harvest from the bottom up: Pick the largest outer leaves first, and let the smaller ones in the center keep growing. This keeps the plant strong and productive!

- Watch for pests: Aphids and cabbage worms love collards too! Check the undersides of leaves and remove pests by hand or use a gentle spray of soapy water.

- Give them room to breathe: Trim any yellowing or damaged leaves to improve airflow and reduce the chance of mildew.

- Water consistently! Collards like moist but not soggy soil. Aim for deep watering at the base in the early morning or evening.

These greens have deep roots in Southern foodways and community care. Let’s honor them by tending them well! 💚
