It's our last week of school, and we're feeling a little bittersweet as we say goodbye to some students who are heading off on their next adventure. We’ll miss you and hope you’ll come back to visit!

For those staying with us for the 2026–2027 school year, a friendly reminder that NDS will be closed Monday, August 31 through Monday, September 7 for transition time and Labor Day.

We’ll reopen on Tuesday, September 8, for the first day of the 2026–2027 school year! We can’t wait to welcome everyone back!

For the last month or so, our twice-weekly Try-It table has been abundant with fresh bread, vegetables, maple syrup, and more from Earth Sky Time Community Farm, thanks to funding from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture's Farm to School grants program. This year, NDS partnered with Bennington Early Childhood Center and several other ECE programs to purchase CSA shares from local farms.

We love seeing our families experiment with local food!

Wild blueberries carry generations of history.

For centuries, Wabanaki peoples, including the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet), Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, and Abenaki, have tended wild blueberry barrens across their ancestral lands in present-day Maine, Vermont, and Canada.

Today, the annual blueberry harvest remains an important connection to land, culture, and community. For the Passamaquoddy Tribe, reclaiming traditional growing and harvesting practices is also part of a broader effort to preserve Indigenous knowledge and renew cultural traditions threatened by generations of displacement and forced assimilation.

Years at NDS: Combined 6 years

Favorite Chef Tammy Dish: Absolutely anything. Tammy puts so much love into feeding everyone. I am grateful.

Favorite Children's Book: The Little Prince

Fun Fact: I love all forms of art and I ride motorcycle!

Hobbies: Gardening and landscape work, riding my motorcycle, working with my hands creating things.

What do you love about your job?
I love working with young children because they are fun and thoughtful. They are genuine and creative. I enjoy their silliness and their stories. I enjoy watching their excitement when learning new skills and building confidence while doing so. I love that we, as teachers, have the opportunity to help our students thrive and grow in a nurturing, safe environment. We have the opportunity to teach our students skills they will use and master in the years to come. We are able to help teach right from wrong and how to be thoughtful toward one another. It is so nice to come to work and spend time with such thoughtful kiddos who love to share creations they've built, hand-drawn art projects, stories of their families, and lots of hugs.

Berries are August’s Harvest of the Month! Vermont produces a diverse array of berries, including blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and more.

Whether enjoyed fresh, blended, baked, preserved, or juiced, berries are packed with antioxidants that fight inflammation, help lower cholesterol, combat heart disease, and stabilize blood sugar levels. They’re also great for low-carb diets due to their high fiber content.

Toss them into a smoothie, sprinkle them on salads, or mix them into muffins for a burst of tart sweetness!
