Over the past few days, we partnered with Connections Family Resource Center for some community outreach! Connections invited us to join several of their amazing events this week, where their team brought resources, food, fun, and opportunities to connect with the community. They were generous in giving us space to chat with community members and share information about our Bilingual Volunteer Corps.

It’s always a pleasure working with the Connections Family Resources team. We love the energy they bring: it’s clear how ambitious their team is and how much they care about building stronger relationships with the community. We’re grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and look forward to continuing to build together!

On Tuesday, the Mayor of the Town of Dumfries presented a Proclamation recognizing National Hispanic Heritage Month at the Town Council meeting. Dream in NOVA was honored to accept recognition for the role we play in the community by serving the Latino population through some of our programs.

Two years ago, a group of people who believed in the power of community met in a room to discuss the foundation of a community-driven, community-focused, high-impact organization, and Dream in NOVA was founded on the vision that anyone has the ability to DREAM and can reach those dreams with the proper resources.

Today, Dream in NOVA runs over 10 programs, has provided over $100,000 of value at no cost to the community while being fueled by the power of volunteerism, supported scholarships, and mentored young leaders. Our programs are multifaceted in that EVERYONE can play a role, and rather than checking off boxes, we are intentional in everything we do. We couldn't make all of this happen without each and every person who has supported us, volunteered with us, believed in us, and talked about us.

💇🏽‍♀️✨ We are rolling into our THIRD year of the After School Cosmetology Program at Manassas Park High School! Yesterday, we spoke with about 30 students interested in joining this year’s program!

This program is about much more than cosmetology. We introduce students to the field while helping them build confidence and develop professional and client-facing skills. Students learn everything from sanitation and color theory to makeup application and hairstyling. Our ultimate goal is to give students exposure to a fulfilling career path and the confidence to pursue it after high school graduation.

This program is able to grow because of the support of our community, and we couldn’t do it without you. As we begin our third year, we are asking our community to consider donating to help us replenish supplies and provide our students with even more opportunities. When you donate, you’re investing in a student’s confidence, skills, and future. Every contribution, big or small, helps us continue creating opportunities for our community.

This summer, our Bilingual Volunteer Corps, Medicaid Support - Outreach Engagement Team has been working to connect the Manassas Park community with Medicaid support and bilingual resources. Our Manassas Park team is led by two high school seniors (Gabriella and Astrid), who have taken the initiative to identify opportunities to engage with the community, from food distributions and community events to school events. Their goal is to help bridge language barriers and connect families with resources they may need. Both students plan to pursue careers in healthcare after graduation, and the work they are doing today reflects their commitment to serving their community and helping others access care and support. This is part of a much larger team and effort that we look forward to highlighting in the future.

Last week, Dream in NOVA had the privilege of spending the week with an incredible group of students at our Manassas Park Elementary School Coding Camp. We watched students challenge themselves, ask thoughtful questions, solve problems, and gain confidence in their computer science knowledge.

On Friday, we celebrated the conclusion of the Coding Camp with a showcase for families, school staff, and community members. It was an opportunity for our students to demonstrate what they learned and the creativity, and curiosity they developed along the way.

Throughout the camp, students learned foundational computer science principles, programming, and artificial intelligence while participating in hands on coding and extra fun activities, like creating binary bracelets with secret messages and building paper circuits. They brought their coding skills to life through projects including step counters, virtual pets, Rock Paper Scissors games, and more creative projects using their microbits. We are excited to continue supporting these students as they grow into the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and leaders.

This program would not have been possible without our incredible volunteers, Manassas Park High School student Jason Romero, Manassas Park High School graduates Gabriel Gonzalez and Cyrish Zorrillia, and Virginia Tech graduate Janet Lu. We are also grateful to our career speakers who shared how computer science opens doors across industries and inspired our students to dream about their futures.

We extend our sincere thanks to Manassas Park City Schools for their partnership and support in making this program possible. We are especially grateful to Micron for their partnership, which allowed students to take home a microbit so they can continue learning, creating, and exploring.

We’re having so much fun at our coding camp this year! Our campers are incredible and extremely smart. We can’t see what their future holds as innovators.

We want to invite parents and the community to our Coding Camp Showcase! The students will present what they learned and what they built. Please bring an ID as you need to check in the front desk! We would love to see you there 🙂

There may be break dancing and some moves from Taekwondo immersed in our technology projects. Come be part of the fun!

Yesterday we kicked off our second annual coding camp at Manassas Park Elementary school! We are introducing basic computer science principles with a new element on AI. Campers are getting hands-on with micro:bits, learning to code and bring their ideas to life through these tiny yet powerful devices. The energy in the room has been incredible. Our students are curious and SO engaged!

What makes this camp even more special is that it’s being led by Manassas Park Elementary School alumni, including recent MPHS graduates and a current senior. Watching them return to the halls where their own journeys began to inspire the next generation of coders is a true full circle moment.
