Annually, the Virginia School Counselor Association recognizes the outstanding and exemplary work of school counselors, counselor educators, administrators, and division-level directors that support the school counseling profession. The association recognizes an individual for Elementary School Counselor of the Year, an individual for Secondary School Counselor of the Year, and an individual for the VSCA Leadership Award. These recipients will be honored during a special luncheon at the 2026 VSCA Annual Conference: Navigating the Waves of Innovation in October 2026.

Awards are given to those nominees who best exhibit the implementation of the ASCA National Model and show evidence of a comprehensive school counseling program. Specifically, the School Counselor of the Year award recognizes two outstanding professionals (elementary and secondary) who have positively impacted their school community. Contributions to the profession can be measured by using the ASCA National Model, evidence of data-driven practices, and implementing a comprehensive counseling program.

Celebrating a counselor who goes above and beyond every single day. Your impact is huge, and your heart is even bigger! 💫 🎓

Give an example of a task, project, or situation where this counselor shined?
- Mrs. Dowdy founded the school’s Kindness Club a few years ago, which began as positive sticky notes on bathroom mirrors and high-five Fridays. However, this program has grown to implement anti-bullying campaigns, clothing and hygiene closets for students to access, and a weekend meals program, which provides 25 students with meals and snacks each Friday afternoon. During holidays, this club also provides families with large meals and gifts.

What positive quality did they demonstrate? (e.g., teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, creativity)
-Problem-solving to recognize community needs

What was the impact of their action? (e.g., helped the team, saved the project, boosted morale)
- These students’ attendance and academics have improved, as they are able to safely and anonymously access basic needs.

- Tarri Jones does an exceptional job supporting high school students as they pursue their academic and career goals. She goes above and beyond by organizing visits to multiple universities—such as Hampton University, VCU, Virginia Tech, UVA, and Norfolk State—providing students with exposure to opportunities beyond Newport News and helping them envision a broader future.

What positive quality did they demonstrate? (e.g., teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, creativity)
-She actively works to broaden students’ horizons by exposing them to diverse educational environments and future opportunities beyond their immediate community. This reflects qualities such as: Dedication – Going above and beyond to support students’ academic and career goals. Initiative – Organizing visits to multiple universities to provide real-world exposure. Empowerment – Helping students envision possibilities for their future.
