der to sustain for generations to come the integrity of the Commonwealth’s rich natural heritage of ecosystems and biodiversity for purposes of enjoyment, enlightenment, sustainable use, and our own very survival. To this end, we advocate and follow practices that will conserve our natural endowment, and we discourage and combat practices that will endanger or destroy it. We're fortunate to have this beautiful national park in our county.

Unlike other national parks, Prince William Forest Park doesn't have just one law involved in the creation of its lands as a park, but several. The land used in creating the park was transferred to the National Park Service for the Chopawamsic Recreational Demonstration Project on November 14, 1936, which is considered as the day the Prince William Forest Park was officially created. However, eighty-five years ago today, on August 13, 1940, Public Law 763, 54 Stat. 785 officially provided for the administration of the Chopawamsic recreational demonstration project as part of the park system in the National Capital area. Instead of just being a project, we were now on the official path to becoming the park we are today (legislation in 1948 would change the park's name from Chopawamsic RDA to Prince William Forest Park).
