Long stay pup Ivory is young, social, and most importantly she is a piece of clay in desperate need of an artist to shape and mold her into the attentive yet loving dog that is waiting to burst out.

She is searching for someone to show her what to do, how to do it, when to do it and how to get the approval she craves. She wants structure, routine and guidance. Most importantly she wants the confidence that comes from an owner who knows how to show her she need not worry about anything ever again.

In the shelter environment she is lost and that has made her also become lost in the shuffle. Sure, she goes out a few times a day and has some sessions in the play yard where she plays fetch happily with the walkers. But she wants more. And from the same family, every day, forever.

Ivory recently got a short taste of life in a home when she got a foster break with a family including two older teens. They reported she got along with everyone beautifully. They noted she loves to be outside and go for walks but more so just wants to be around people she can call home. In one anecdote, foster mom accidentally left the back gate open and Ivory just sat on the porch waiting for her foster mom to let her in rather than going to explore the big world all on her own. This loyalty towards her family is what gives Ivory her tremendous potential and tells us Ivory is indeed a very special girl.

What makes things tough for Ivory is she was a stray so how she landed at the shelter at this point in her life is a mystery. She is crate-trained (prefers sleeping there at night) and while she is unknown with dogs, her foster mom recounted an incident where they were approached on a walk by an off-leash dog and Ivory was calm, poised and not at all reactive. It didn’t take long for Ivory to learn her foster family had her back and she could count on them to keep her safe.

Ivory hasn’t had a lot of interest and her barrier reactivity makes it so she isn’t on the adoption floor. But she is available to meet upon request. Sometimes the odds feel stacked against these pups who have already had a difficult road, which is why we have sponsored Ivory’s adoption (we sponsored her spay all the way back in April). She would really benefit from a confident adopter who knows that getting Ivory transitioned from the shelter lifestyle to a warm and loving home will take a little time and patience. But once she gets settled in she is going to be an attentive, loyal and affectionate companion.

Come see just how much joy this girl can bring into your life and ask to meet her at the Prince William County Animal Services Bureau.

This week’s Fresh Face Friday is being hijacked by…KITTENS! 😻

Kitten season is in full swing, the Prince William County Animal Services Bureau is filling up, and all the foster homes are crowded with the most recent baby arrivals, growing big and strong so they can make their adoption floor debut.

As a municipal county shelter, the Prince William County Animal Services Center needs kittens to be adopted quickly and while they are still small to make room for all the littles being cared for in foster. It’s basically a well-oiled machine that runs on adoptions. 🥰

If you or anyone you know of is looking to add a kitten to their home please consider rescuing from a crowded shelter!

One of the hardest things about seeing young Shepherd/Husky mixes enter the shelter is knowing that shelter life rarely allows them to show their best selves.

The irony is that the very things people love most about these dogs are often the things that make shelter life so difficult for them.

People seek them out because they’re intelligent, loyal, affectionate, eager to learn, and deeply connected to their people. These dogs don’t just want a home- they want to be part of your life. They want to go where you go, learn what you’re teaching, help with whatever project you’re working on, and be included in all the adventures. They’re like eager kids bursting with pride and happiness to just be by your side.

So when they’re suddenly spending 23.5 hours a day in a kennel with limited opportunities for exercise, mental stimulation, adventure, and human connection, it can be incredibly hard on them. And when they finally get those precious 10 or 15 minutes outside, it’s almost as if they’re trying to make up for an entire day’s worth of living all at once.

It’s important to remember that the dog you bring home on day one isn’t the dog you’ll be living with a few weeks later. Potential adopters meet them in one of the most stressful environments imaginable and then often expect the dog they see during the first few hours or days after adoption to be an accurate picture of what life with that dog will always be like.

But dogs like Benji need time to decompress. Time to exhale. Time to learn they’re safe, settle into a routine, and let their personalities emerge.

Fortunately, Benji has been given just that while spending some time in a wonderful foster home where his adorable personality could finally shine through.

This is what his foster had to say:

“Benji is a truly incredible pup and I can’t believe he was overlooked in the shelter for so long! Seeing him decompress in his foster home and show his true personality has been so amazing. When I first heard he was approximately one years old, an active breed, and had been in the shelter for several months despite his young age, I thought I was in for a very challenging time, but it has been the absolute opposite, Benji makes things so easy!

He is incredibly obedient, intelligent, and loving. He really enjoys being the center of attention, so at the end of the day he is happy to just lay by the couch at your feet and get some pets!

Benji enjoys our long walks, learning new tricks, and playing fetch (he is really good at it!) but also is perfectly content with laying sprawled out on the floor and relaxing. He is very vocal and not afraid to ask for what he wants, so it has been hilarious hearing all of his different pitches!

He truly is a great dog with so many silly quirks and lovable traits. I can tell that he feels so happy to just be included in my family and is appreciative of every single pet or ‘good boy’ he receives.

Benji is a humble, loving, goofy boy and is looking for his forever home.” 🐾❤️”

Needless to say, none of us who’ve gotten to know him are surprised.

From the day he arrived at the shelter, Benji has been working his hardest to connect with people, learn what’s expected of him, and earn every bit of praise and affection that comes his way.

Now all that’s left is finding him the forever family he deserves. ❤️ Benji is currently in foster care- please contact Nancy at [email protected] to arrange a meeting with this handsome guy who’s waiting for his shot.

Benji has been neutered, is up to date on his vaccinations, would do best in a cat free home and with kids who are a little older. If you have a resident pup, make sure to bring them when you go to meet him.

Special delivery: one handsome tuxedo cat looking for a home. 🖤🤍

Meet FedEx, a 1–3 year old former stray who somehow ended up at the shelter instead of curled up on someone’s couch where he clearly belongs. With his understated tuxedo markings (check out his white chin and the tips of his paws! 😻) and charming expression, FedEx is dressed to impress and ready to deliver love, companionship, and plenty of purrs straight to his future family.

Life as a stray can be tough, but FedEx is hoping his next stop is a forever home where he’ll never have to wonder where his next meal or safe nap spot will come from again.

FedEx is already neutered and since he was a stray he is unknown with other cats, dogs and kids. He is very friendly and ready to be wonderful companion.

Come meet FedEx at the Prince William County Animal Services Bureau and see if this special delivery was meant for you. 📦🐾

When Lola first arrived at the Prince William County Animal Services Center she was so scared and nervous she could hardly be handled. With routine enrichment and socialization she has quickly become a volunteer favorite, and her confidence has blossomed.

She has been doing so great she even got to go on a foster field trip last week and was a perfect lady.

“Lola was such a good girl. She was interested in other dogs but did just fine around them. She waited patiently while we ate lunch and she did get a few fries as a reward. Lola is just the best girl who really enjoys her attention and being close to “her” people.”

Lola is four years old and already spayed. According to her previous owner Lola is not a match with kids or cats. But around dogs she is a social butterfly making her the perfect addition to an adult home with an existing dog or as your sole companion. She is eager to shower her new owners with unconditional love and loyalty and will surely bring joy and laughter to her new home.

Unfortunately, Lola still has lots of anxiety around new people peering into her kennel (I mean, can you blame her?) so she is only available to meet upon request at this time. But ask to meet her and she softens into a big ball of mush in only a few minutes. This delightful, elegant lady is ready to leap into your heart and home.

PUPDATE: King Davis has been adopted! 🥳

This is what a shelter puppy *really* looks like.

People come into the shelter all the time to ask for puppies and what they specifically want is an 8-12 week-old, barely able to be away from mom and ready to imprint on their new adopter.

The reality is that far more often puppies come in to the shelter already being failed by their first owners. And this may come as a surprise, but they do not get adopted quickly. Because at 10-12 months old they are nearly grown and the owners who have given up on them do not hand them over in better shape than they got them.

King Davis is the poster child for a shelter puppy who has already experienced being given up on. He is 9 months old and still has his whole life ahead of him. He’s still at that phase where his mind is a little sponge, he’s eager to learn everything about the world yet is stuck in a kennel for most of the day. But like any puppy he still has so much growth ahead of him and he needs an owner committed to following through on making sure he reaches his tremendous potential. He needs patience, routine and most of all love so he can build trust and quickly put all this shelter business behind him.

The great news is that King Davis is already neutered (way cheaper than adopting an unaltered baby puppy) and according to his previous owner he is good with other dogs and kids. However, this big puppy does not know his size and strength and still very much has puppy manners. His enthusiasm is at an 11 at all times but despite the rambunctiousness you can’t help but adore his wide-eyed innocence. And speaking of eyes, have you seen anything quite like his? Heterochromia and some pretty serious eye-liner too! King Davis is simply striking.

If you’ve been thinking about adding a puppy but want to make a real difference and rescue a needy animal who is already on their second chance so young, please consider King Davis!

Mr. Nepoleon may be small in stature but he is ready to conquer your heart! 👑

Mr. Nepoleon is a seasoned gentleman with a big personality and an even bigger soul. This senior chihuahua may be enjoying his golden years, but he still rules the kingdom when it comes to cozy blankets, tasty treats, and winning over everyone he meets. Sweet, loyal, and full of charm, Mr. Nepoleon is looking for a quiet home where he can relax like the royalty he truly is.

Mr. Nepoleon is 14 years young and prefers to be your only pet. According to his previous owners he is good with kids. But remember! This little guy is fragile and despite his big name he absolutely needs to be handled with care. ❤️‍🩹
